Struggling with my last 17 emu downloads

edited October 2010 in General
The title sums it up. I think I'm trying to find that "perfect album(s)" for my last downloads, and it's making me frustratingly indecisive. Please help.

I am looking for homerun albums, no different than any other time.

It doesn't have to be jazz, though that is the genre I'm most focusing on.

If it's jazz, I would like it to have vibes and/or strings. That Tim Collins "Fade" album is a good example, as is Zorn's Alhambra Love Songs ensembles, and I'm always up for an album like Sickafoose's "Tiny Resistors". I would like the recs to be recent releases, unless some crazy good archival find was made that's never before seen the light of day kind of thing.

Non-jazz: I'm leaning toward picking up another Efterklang album, since they don't have it on Limewire. I really like Balmorhea, but I'm pretty picky about my neo-folk. I still often listen to that Disinterested album "Behind Us".

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna use six dls on Phil Cohran's "The Zulu 45s", but I'm still undecided.

I've gone through most of the threads already here and listened to stuff. I often bop over to amazon for samples of stuff you guys are listening to.

Your list of recs can be as long or as short as you decide. I'm not intimidated by long lists. I outlast long lists. My patience is suffocatingly endless. Well, except when I'm trying to beat an emu deadline.

  • Great rec. I picked that disc up on BMG back in the day. It's been a while since I last listened to it, though, and it's time to get it back in the rotation. Thanks.
  • What do you think of this

I definitely want it but they are charging 12 credits for 4 tunes and it is sticking in my craw just a wee bit.
  • For non-jazz, how about David Byrne - The Complete Score From "The Catherine Wheel" if you don't already have it. I know you're an Eno fan. This one resonated much better for me than Byrne & Eno's My Life In the Bush of Ghosts.
  • Y'know, I'm not sure I've ever heard Dig It, which is odd to me, since I've gone through several Red Garland binges in my life.
If you want a solid Garland - Coltrane team-up, this album is one of my favorites...

"All Mornin' Long" - Red Garland

...which I see is 12 dls for 3 tracks.

Y'know, I'd almost recommend not buying any of that Red Garland on emusic. A lot of that stuff can be found pretty cheap used and a lot of it has gotten the reissue treatment, making it more available at other locations.
If, however, the only consideration you have in purchasing off emu is whether it's music you'll love, well, I have a deep appreciation for Red's music and there's never been a time when at least one of his albums wasn't on my "currently playing" shelf.
  • Okay, whoa, this is nothing like what I was talking about, but going through the new releases, I found a label called Abeille Musique. A lot of piano and strings jazz that hearkens to a sound not unlike some of Esbjorn Svensson's wonderful music.

Here's the album I think I'm about to buy...

It's an album called "Post Jazz" by Issam Krimi. It's really really good. I might break one of my rules and purchase based off samples alone.

First, however, I'm gonna keep going though the label's em albums. Also, I think there's a couple different permutations of the Abeille label tag.
  • Wow, yeah, Abeille has a whole shitload of permutations.
  • Do you have Efterklang's Magic Chairs? If not, I highly recommend it. Took me a few listens, but now I'm in love.

As for their other two albums, haven't gotten them yet. But take note that on eMu you can get a good deal with the versions that include the EPs.

Listening to samples now. Very good rec. Not sure if it's gonna be "the one", but it'll be on my list for later, regardless.
I don't know why, but my ears are perpetually in battle with Byrne's sound. They were as a teenager with Stop Making Sense and they still are much much later with everything he's ever done. I always fight buying his stuff, but after a couple listens wonder how I ever lived without it.

Good to know about Magic Chairs. I listened to it straight through on Lala, but wasn't impressed enough to purchase it, but liked it enough to pause over the download button each time my refresh date at emu was arriving. I still might get it. I'm also thinking about Parades. I have the Performing Parades, and am a bit uncertain how redundant getting the studio album will be.

And, yeah, it's a great deal they have on the album+EP combo buys. Unfortunately, I already purchased all that stuff, so I can't take advantage of it. I really enjoy Tripper, and the EP that comes with Parades is a nice little listen.

    @ jonahpwll. . . (and others):
I've found a video with Efterklang in colaboration with one of my all time favourite Danish artists Martin Hall: Tu Es Mon Image (featuring Efterklang)
    - I've been following Martin's carreer since the early 80. when he was crying his heart out in the Danish punk band Ballet M
