edited November 2010 in Jazz
Arguably the finest addition to emu verve related is Billy Mitchell's "This is Billy Mitchell".

It's bargain priced considering how good it is (I think it's under four bucks). Billy played tenor with Thad Jones Blue Note sessions and with Dizzy's orchestra, notably on the "Live at Newport" recording.

If I had to compare him to another musician, I would choose Paul Desmond in that he finds a way to emit a light-hearted touch from such a powerful sound.

The first track on the album, "J&B" is one of the all-time greats for opening tracks.

I picked up the physical cd years ago new for eight or nine bucks (those Verve reissues were nicely remastered and relatively a bargain between $8-$10 retail) and I wouldn't give up the couple years of listening to it just to have picked it up at half the price.

Highly recommended.

Here's a youtube video of the song "J&B". There also appear to be other tracks from the album available to listen to before purchasing...

I'm surprised I didn't mention this album here sooner. I keep thinking I'll find an old thread here, but nothing.
