I read most threads, and there's lots here that isn't something I would listen to more than once, but I read anyway. Once in a while I want to try something new, and by golly, there's plenty new here to try.
The thread that causes me the most trouble is the "What I'm Listening to" because many of those album covers mean nothing to me. I do appreciate when the poster gives a little summary of the music to give me some idea of what to expect.
The real exercise begins after good and bad. There's "I think it's good but after six more listens I won't be so sure", then there's "I think it's bad but I am going to doggedly listen to it until I discover that it's really good" and then there's "it's really bad and if I listened to it at all it would make me a bad person" and then there's "it's really good in an intellectual kind of way but I have to be in the right place and mood to actually enjoy it" and then there's "it was good ten years ago but now it sucks" and then there's "it's really bad but some apparently sentient person on the board said it was really good so I should listen to it again," and then there's...

Seriously, agreed. I actually enjoy reading other folk here talk about stuff I have little intention of listening to. Broadens my horizons. And now and then it might prod me to listen. But even if I don't I learn from other people's appreciation.
This discussion has made me laugh and made me think. I don't have anything remotely intelligent or belligerent (I haven't felt belligerent about music since the Reagan/Thatcher era) to add, but the joy of this forum is that so many others do.

One sees it categorized that way online sometimes, but I think that involves projecting backwards from later releases. I wouldn't say so. I'm not sure how useful a category ambient really is half the time, since (a) the classic definition has to do as much with a mode of listening as with musical features and (b) what gets put in there when sites label music is pretty diverse (from minimalist drone to micronoise experiments to downtempo dance music to new age piano to nature recordings to the quiet bits of metal to....)
Just returned to this after 22 hours away from my computer - almost getting withdrawal symptoms, worrying... Whatever categories we end up won't suit everyone, but unlike the other place they need not be permanent if they don't work. We'll all know soon enough. Just to add my bit to the discussion. I find the term World (my preference) or International too wide. Are we having sub categories or layering? If so, could it be further divided into at least continents? However whatever we end up with is likely to be an improvement, so thanks to all involved in doing it
