Pitchfork Top 200 Albums of 2000

edited October 2009 in Fight Club
Figured we should have a thread just for arguing about this list :P

I'm working on posting the entire thing shortly, in the meantime my first issues are no Yo La Tengo, Black Keys, St. Vincent, Santogold, or Sloan... seriously?

  • my first issues are no Yo La Tengo

no. 37, Yo La Tengo, and then nothing turned itself inside out; if you're going to fight, at least fight fair.

Personally I like the list, feel no strong sense of disagreement, but I do wish there were more things on there that I hadn't heard; more to explore.
  • I also can't really build up a good head of steam to argue with the list, although I am shocked that Santogold isn't on there somewhere.

I'm certainly enjoying listening to my lala downloads though!

  • Honestly I can't get that worked up about any list. But they're always a good start for discussing things. At first this list didn't bug me at all, but if you tell me that Kanye West has 3 albums better than St. Vincent's Marry Me I'll tell you you're crazy. Actually if you tell me there were 100 albums this decade better than Marry Me I'll call you crazy :P

Yeah, I missed the Yo La Tengo on the list, but no Kick Your Ass? 2 albums and a collaboration from M.I.A. but no debut from Santogold? Daft Punk in the top 3?

But I will give them credit for putting This Is It, Vampire Weekend, Silent Alarm and the Arctic Monkeys debut up decently inspite of the backlash those albums received.
  • Like many lists, the top selections are somewhat predictable (if controversial), the bottom of the list is more instructive (in terms of finding the new and unfamiliar), and that it reveals the biases of the editors (long on hipster disco, low on alt-country).
  • if you tell me that Kanye West has 3 albums better than St. Vincent's Marry Me I'll tell you you're crazy.

    Uhhhhh . . . . . .

    I must be crazy.
  • I like the P2K list a lot, BTW. Very well-written blurbs (for the most part). The Lala tie-in is fantastic, obv.
  • Elliot Smith "Figure 8" should be way higher on the list.
    Missing from it:
Calexico - "Feast of Wire" should be in the top ten.
Richmond Fontaine - "Post to Wire"
Radar Bros. - "Fallen Leaf Pages"
    Odiorne - "Heavy Wish"
    Spiritualized - "Songs in A&E"
    Lambchop - "Damaged"
Does Tom Waits massive three cd release meet the qualifications for this list?
I also assume that jazz albums aren't considered for the list.
The fact that some of these bands had more than one slot on the list says more about the love affairs of the Pitchfork staff than it does about who deserves to be on it.
  • Well I have 7 of the 200. lol.
  • Three more in the top 50, so that makes 12 for me.
  • I think I have maybe 70 of the Top 200. I wish Feast of Wine made the list, too. In fact, I wish Cole's Corner and Wilderness's debut disc made the list. But it's still a terrific list.

Based on it, I downloaded The Boredoms' disc from Lala. And it is fantastic. Almost falling-apart-at-the-seams with the drumming and explosions of noise, but still retaining a melodic structure with riffs and hooks.
  • oh dear... I have 6 of the 200. Funny thing is, 5 of those are some of the most disappointing albums I own.
guess I'm in the 'not even remotely cool' category.....

I think I'm missing about 13-14 out of the whole list (after buying about 20 from the Lala sale)- mainly the major label Rap/R&B stuff.

I'll have to say I haven't closely listened to a lot of the stuff outside of the top 50 or so. I'll get to it though.

If I were to make my own top 25 of the decade (only Pop/Rock/indie/R&B/Rap. etc.). maybe half of them are on the list here.
  • I'll have to say I haven't closely listened to a lot of the stuff outside of the top 50 or so. I'll get to it though.

A lot of great stuff between Nos. 200 -- 51.
  • on a quick count i'm at about 60. i'd definitely feel cooler if that were a lower number. because hip isn't all that cool in my book, and pitchfork is mostly just hip.
mainly the major label Rap/R&B stuff

i'd say a big chunk of the stuff that i don't have but am interested falls into that category - I just got the D'Angelo disk and really liked it on my first spin.
Based on it, I downloaded The Boredoms' disc from Lala. And it is fantastic. Almost falling-apart-at-the-seams with the drumming and explosions of noise, but still retaining a melodic structure with riffs and hooks.

i just got that one too and am really loving it.
  • I've limited myself to only three new dls from the list: Tyranny of Distance, Sound of Silver, and Change. I end up having about 10% of the albums on the list. But it's telling that my tastes have changed over the last two years: a few weeks ago I sold of my copy of Kid A, feeling that it wasn't offering me anything.
  • I only have 19 of the 200. Seems like a good number to me, as I enjoy reading Pitchfork but don't want to identify with them too much.

    Craig
  • Yeah, but there's a lot of great music on P4K's list.
  • Plus the list got me inspired to listen to a bunch of stuff I had shelved for a long time. The Exploding Heart's amazing Guitar Romantic is a good example of this. What a ball of energy that album is, and what a great throwback rock record. So sad they're no more.

Like Raymond23 and Wanderer, you're such a contrary bastard! Damn you Minnesotans!
  • @Daniel - At least you admit that you're crazy :P Kanye's an easy target to pick on, because even the U.S. President thinks he's a jackass.

I have about 80 of the discs (before the Lala sale), also have tracks from a few more and have really wanted to pick up a few others. The fact that I already had 17 of the top 25 is probably why I'm a little more contrary about those (seriously, The Avalanches at #10?). I'm happy that I finally got a hold of Discovery, but if I hadn't listened to music in 10 years and someone told me that it was the 3rd best album this decade I would probably just skip everything. Some great songs with a lot of meandering filler.

Also, now that I've finally caved in and started giving Radiohead a listen again the critical acclaim is really sounding hollow. In Rainbows was a decent record, but nothing spectacular. After listening to previews $1.99 is too much for Amnesiac. Today Kid A gets a spin - will I be completely disgusted? Stay tuned...
  • Kanye is a jackass. He's also a brilliant pop artist. Among a handful who could be the best of the decade.
  • froggy - Aren't you glad you live here!?! Seriously though, it's not really being contrary as there are a bunch of albums on that list I'd like to have, but I don't. I just think Pitchfork is often a little too full of themselves and it turns me off so I don't really want to be identified with them. I still read it and Stereogum daily though.

Thom - Knowing how in sync we often are, you should like Kid A as I LOVE that album. I like Amnesiac, but Kid A is head and shoulders above. "The National Anthem" and "Idioteque" are fantastic and "Optimistic" would likely make my top five all time.

    Craig
  • I do like the cities - except for the weather that is about to come and stay for 6 months.

As far as Pitchfork goes, I think it's a case of separating the message from the messenger. That and the fact with their revolving cast of reviewers means they can be very hit and miss. That said, I do check them about once a week and make note of albums that they give the mid 7s or higher. They are maybe one of 5-6 sources of info for me, and then I let my ears decide. They've definitely given their share of 6s to really good albums and given 8.5 or higher the a fair amount of good but not great ones. I will say as far as pointing me to albums I might not have otherwise noticed, they have probably done so more in the last 10 years than any other single source, unless the various recs on the eMu boards count.

Besides, Pitchfork started in Minneapolis, so I need to at least tip my hat to a fellow homeboy.
  • I only have 4 of these:

    134. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
    119. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
    87. Kanye West - Graduation (Impulse purchase after listening to "Stronger")
    07. The Strokes - Is This It

Does that make me weird? Like I need any help there :)

I figured The White Stripes' Icky Thump would be on here.

    cowrun
  • Yay for lists! I already have quite a few albums on this list, so I might do some guided listening after I finish my Fela kick. BTW, I think Kanye's music is great...
