My cousin Jim will be scouring YouTube for video of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as soon as he hears about this.
We actually did get "Achin' to Be." The most prominent omission was "I'll Be You"...Maybe they're not playing that these days.
During one part of our show where there was a long conference going on, Minehan started playing and singing a little medley of polka hits, after which he commented, "I am so fired right now." The show started right on time, which in retrospect was prob a good indicator of professionalism/sobriety.
We got "I'll Be You". Got it at Midway, too. I think they're just mixing it up.
I believe "Achin' to Be" was on the set list. Paul asked if we wanted to hear it, but immediately said something along the lines of "no, let's do "Kiss Me On the Bus". So I assume he just wasn't feeling it.
Thanks Craig and Doofy for the reviews, very much looking forward to the Philly show on Saturday. BTW, if anybody is thinking about going to that one but doesn't have tix yet, I have two extras since all of my friends are apparently lame. Send me a PM and I'll hook you up, just looking for face value. I'll even eat the Ticketbastard charges.
You're getting me more excited than I already was, rostasi!
I saw a preview video for the tour, and they did specifically mention three albums (Computer World, Autobahn, and Trans Europe Express), so hopefully we get a full album as well (crosses my fingers for TEE, although, any of them would be great).
Got to see Sam Green's "The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller" with Yo La Tengo performing the soundtrack live. Fantastic show. I loved the music (obviously), but the presentation of Fuller's life and ideas was a well done mixture of humor and admiration.
The Replacements show in Philly was gloriously shambolic. They pulled most of the set list from my three favorite albums (Let it Be, Tim, and Pleased to Meet Me). Paul forgot the words a few times, teased the crowd a few times ("Hey, how about a 'Little Mascara?'" Big cheer. "Nah, don't remember that one." Then they played it anyway). They played two songs at the same time (Seen Your Video and Androgynous), which was as bad as it sounds but still hilarious. Paul and the drummer played Androgynous while Tommy and Josh played Seen Your Video. They threw in a completely random punk cover (Borstal Breakout) and even more random segues in the middle of their own songs.
Superchunk was a perfect opener, chaotic but tight, and they rocked like maniacs. Love that band. We ended up missing most of the first band (J. Roddy Walston & the Business) because they started early - showtime was supposed to be 7:30 but we got there a little after 7 and they were already playing. The weather was beautiful, probably high 60s when the sun went down, with a slight breeze. The views from Penn's Landing are spectacular and there were random fireworks over the water during the show. All in all, a great night.
Thanks again for the ticket, Muggsy. It was a great set by the Replacements. I'm just pissed because I missed Superchunk. Kind of ridiculous that they posted the start time as 7:30 but had posters showing that it started at 7.
No problem Thom, glad you enjoyed the show. I would have been royally pissed to miss Superchunk, but we got there early because I wanted to try to sell my extra ticket. No dice, unfortunately, it was a buyer's market. I'm still shocked it didn't sell out.
Pixies last night at the 9:30 Club. This was a "surprise" show, announced only on the 9:30 Club email list last Wednesday night. Presale tickets Thursday morning, GA tickets Friday morning, sold out in a few minutes. They were in town for a headlining festival appearance Saturday afternoon, but I'm glad they decided to stick around.
Opening act was a band called Mynabirds, the lead singer was from DC and used to be in a band here called Georgie James (I recall seeing them open for somebody else a few years back). Good stuff, kinda reminded me of Metric a little bit. Pixies came out around 9 pm and blew the doors off for the next two hours. They seemed to be having a good time and the crowd was all over it. Some asshat standing near me started screaming "Kim Deal" when they walked out, and he didn't stop until they started the first song, but they played four or five songs before stopping to take a breath, and by then he decided to keep his mouth shut. Good thing, because everybody around him looked ready to take turns beating him into silence if necessary. The new bass player was really good. She did all of Kim's vocal parts, but her vocals were extremely processed and a bit buried in the mix, as if not looking to draw any attention. She's a better bass player than Kim though, and that's not meant as a knock at all.
Prince did two shows at the Warner Theatre in DC Sunday night. They were announced late last week. I would love to have gone but had a previous commitment. Sunday morning, I got an email that last-minute tickets for both shows were available, so out of curiosity I clicked on the link. The only seats available were in the orchestra section, most expensive tickets in the venue.
Four hundred bucks EACH.
Now, if I was going to pay $400 to see anybody live, Prince in a smallish venue would be at the top of the list. But still, it's insane. On the other hand, both shows sold out, and the Washington Post reviews made it sound like $400 was totally reasonable.
When Prince first reemerged from hiding a couple years ago I dropped $250 a ticket to see him in the local jazz club. The show ended up being the debut of his 3rd Eye Girl backing band. Totally worth the $250 to stand about 8 feet from Prince.
Was reading yesterday how the cheapest obstructed view standing room tickets for the Stanley Cup final game six last night were over $1000, while secondary market lower bowl seats along the glass were going for $15k to $25k, I guess Prince is cheap.
People were making 10x profit on those tickets. I could of tried to get in on that!
Even during the regular season, those games are prohibitively expensive...$100 or more for "cheap seats." I guess if they can fill the place for those prices, more power to 'em.
I enjoyed that series very much, June and all. What a team.

Just learned I'll once again have a press pass to the Soundset hip hop festival. Ice Cube is there this year.

Really fun show. I'm dragging a bit this morning.
I saw Hot Chip on Saturday night. They're even better live than I expected. Incredibly fun.

Oh well. I am going to see Richard Thompson with his Electric Trio at the Birchmere tonight.
$400 is a crazy amount, though.
