Oh boy ! - It is no wonder that this fine album is on Textura's 2011 top 20 list:
"On Flickers of Mime / Death of Memes, Berne and his so-called Abandoned Orchestra create mesmerizing sound-paintings by augmenting his saxophone (tenor, alto, and soprano) and saduk (a self-created instrument that combines a flute and reed instrument) with piano, lap steel guitar, ocarina, Chinese bamboo flute, recorder, Irish whistle, conch shells, and guttural vocal effects (his other invented instruments include the tridoulaphoneanother flute-reed hybridand the shakuhachophone, a shakuhachi-saxophone creation).Technically, one could call Berne a virtuoso but that would miss the point: instead, his energies are directed towards alchemizing sound into ravishing settings that often suggest states of feverish possession."
"Founded by James Poke and John Godfrey in 1989 to play at the new Dutch music festival in York, Icebreaker is a 14-piece group consisting of panpipes, saxes, electric violin and cello, guitars, percussion and keyboards. Icebreaker have established themselves as one of the UK's leading contemporary music interpreters.
As a group of musicians that always plays amplified, it boasts an exciting repertoire which encompasses some of the best known and most influential names in contemporary music today such as Gavin Bryars, Louis Andriessen, Diderik Wagenaar, David Lang, Michael Gordon, Yannis Kyriakides. Icebreaker is not easy to categorize or pigeonhole in any musical sense. They create a music that appeals to contemporary classical, rock and alternative music audiences alike. Given their unusual instrumental combination, Icebreaker represent a unique voice in British music making."
- And from Emusic's very enlightening biography:
- "An icebreaker is a special-purpose ship or boat designed to move and navigate through ice-covered waters. Although the term usually refers to ice-breaking ships, it may also refer to smaller vessels (e.g., icebreaking boats that were used on the canals of Great Britain in the days of commercial carrying)."
New release in essentially the same genre as Alva Noto's Univrs, but not nearly as interesting, at least to my ear. Going for more of a hypnotic thing I think.
"Cranial Pavement features compositions by a new generation of European composers who are making waves in the UK as well as on the Continent for their visceral new music. Beginning with a brilliant, new realization of Nancarrow's "Study for Player Piano #2b," Cranial Pavement follows Nancarrow's legacy of pop-influenced rhythmic innovation to Englishmen John Godfrey and Richard Craig as well as acclaimed Greek composer Yannis Kyriakides."
