@Craig, I believe it was Brighternow who put me on to the Jacaszek - thanks! - but yes, it's a very nice album. I've been listening back through the other two he's had out in recent years too, and I think the most recent one is the best to my ears.
Nice track title:
Accompanying Guilty Heimatlos Thoughts of Unauthorized Candy
(just an accident that the initials are an anagram of "caught"? Reminds me of our word game thread.)
Thanks for the link Craig - and there's another very important link on the same page:
Very rare - in fact unavailable - Svarte Greiner release, related to the Deaf Center Owl Splinters project (my album of the year). Thanks for leading me to that.
I think this captures something like the sound of a large home-made robot constructed from pieces of wood, old springs, elastic bands, and piano parts lurching in an ungainly fashion across the landscape. It made me smile all the way home.
@amclark2 Off-hand, I can;t think of anyone else who sounds quite like what he is doing. He has another album called "Tools" where each track is made with a different "tool" - rubber band on one, cooking pan on another, tin can on a third. Great, odd, inventive stuff, off-kilter yet effective.
Not sure I'd want to listen to this often, but it also made me smile, and I love the first track. Just the reference to someone "darjeeling diligently" earned a purchase of that track. Thanks, Brighternow.
"For a duo whose songs employ nothing more than electric and acoustic guitar, they can be surprisingly robust: the opener, Distant Neighbourhood, and Visions both sound like long-lost alt-pop classics shorn of their rhythm section (Visions even has a touch of Blondie about it). There's a spindly, stoned beauty to their more characteristic moments Cool Like Kurt, Homework which shimmer with nostalgia for a past Costelloe is too young to have had."
I've not yet found where I can buy their album, but 5 tracks can be streamed via their MySpace page. I'll add more details if I find any.

I don't usually listen to greatest hits comps, but this one has always worked for me.

Hey GP, your Jacaszek album got a very nice grade at the other Pitchfork today.

Always enjoy this when it comes up in a playlist. I got it at Amie, but it's also nicely priced at eMu.

Almost done with my first run through of my 99 essential Mozart from amazon, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Next up is my 100 supreme Schubert.
Giuseppe Ielasi - (third) stunt
This is brilliant in a totally idiosyncratic, quirky way.

I've been really enjoying (third) stunt - I'll have to pick up some of his other stuff some time. Love that robot description.

Thanks amclark for the reminder - I had to search out the CD, as I haven't put it onto itunes yet

Germanprof, I feel like Replica has some things in common with (third) stunt; it might be worth giving it a scan, but definitely scan before you buy.
