Darkwave meets Kate Bush meets Art of Noise
- "The opening track sounds as if it could be from some darkwave act, like Collide, gone more mainstream,Karin Dreijer Andersson, sounds much like kaRIN of the above mentioned group. Or Bj? (?) not from the above mentioned group. Then we meet a weird version of asian influenced Bush and all mixed with the general playfull soundscapes of Bush and Art of Noise gone electronic in - at times - a darkwave setting. Well worth a serious listen, even if you prefer non-mainstream. The playfullness of "We Share Our Mother's Health" or "One Hit" is quite refreshing."
I've downloaded this from my SFL, so I assume it must have been a Jonah recommendation. I love the cover photograph, reminiscent of so many holidays in southern Europe!
released 20 December 2011

"The intersection of two bands: Bump, with the legendary bassist Steve Swallow and the pianist Wayne Horvitz, rub up against Italy's star trombonist Gianluca Petrella and Austrian alto sax grandmaster Wolfgang Puschnig, the horn section of Previte's fabulous European band, Pan Atlantic. Sparks fly. Recorded in concert on the band's first tour of Europe, Fall 2011."

On a lot of 'best of' lists, this is a very substantial album from drummer Tyshawn Sorey. An interesting list of influences in the comments below, from the label site.
A conversation with Anthony Braxton in 2002 served as the original impetus for Sorey to create this body of work. These pieces, composed between 2002 and 2006, were honed with a group of musicians including many on this recording who played frequently with Sorey under the band name Oblique around New York. The music of Arnold Schoenberg, Béla Bartók, Henry Threadgill, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Steve Coleman figured strongly on his work during this period. Oblique I was recorded in one marathon 13-hour session, with the more intricate compositions (Twenty, Forty, and Fifteen) requiring over an hour each to get the right take. The musicians guitarist Todd Neufeld, alto saxophonist Loren Stillman, keyboardist John Escreet, and bassist Chris Tordini tackle this complex material with aplomb, investing these compositions with verve and conviction, amply demonstrating why they are among the most highly regarded young musicians on the scene today.
Following reading the thread about sound equipment, I decided to listen to music in another room, instead of via my computer as normal, whilst reading a couple of articles for work. I choose a couple of CDs that I know are good quality sound - Neil Young Greatest Hits and Phil Collins Big Band Live in Paris. The Neil Young is actually a 5.1 DVD. It did show up my computer sound, and also my ipod dock sound!
So my four year old had homework to bring in cut out pictures of four things that start with two different letters of the alphabet. His assigned letters: c and q. Q! WTF! And we don't have a printer at home, so we had to rely on magazines. After scouring some National Geographics for quasars, quail or quetzalcoatl, I remembered that my last Rolling Stone had a feature on Questlove. So Questlove, Quesadilla, ducklings (quackers), and a "got milk?" tagline as a picture of a question, along with a cheetah, camper, car and caribou. My wife rejected a picture that had Qassiarsuk, Greenland in the background because it was too big.
Currently listening to several tracks from the remasterd CD of the Beatles White album as part of my sound experiment. I'm then going to try the same tracks on my itunes on the computer, and then on ipod and ipad with headphones and through the dock

Must have listened to this album 50 times or more. Never gets old. Late evening perfection.

I used to be really into TD in the middle 90's, the whole "Berlin School" was good study music back then. This was among my early eMu purchases.
Now back at the computer listening to Disc 2 of

Apparently 12k has 8 physical copies of this left. Trying to decide whether to grab one.
