The genre tags are obviously a good place to start, but if you're looking for a more "granular" way to find stuff that's more to your specific tastes, what I sometimes do is look up a band and/or album I really like, click on the "Community" tab near the top, and then look for "Recent supporters" down along the right side of the page. Then, look at their collections and see if anything looks interesting.
In your (Peter's) case, being an old-school prog fan and all, it's hard to imagine you're not aware of something like The Prog Collective (and their new-ish album Worlds on Hold). But whether you are or not, their Community page has four recent followers on it whose collections you might want to check out. It's unfortunate that Bandcamp doesn't let you see a band's entire raft of followers, but let's face it, in many cases that would probably just be overwhelming.
Although I went through emails for bands I received notices for, I found that time-consuming. It's easier to go through the bandcamp feed (which now includes your purchase activity -- and on the mobile app -- which make it easy just to scroll down stuff. Interestingly, I saw this name on my feed https://bandcamp.com/jedwardkeyes -- I kept thinking, who the hell is this guy until I realize that this is the famed musical curator and critic who also used to write articles and reviews on music. (I must have favorited his feed long ago).
About the feed and annotations, I notice that when scrolling through feeds, it jumps to the track that the fan highlighted as favorite. On the mobile app, you need to click the right arrow to see all the tracks in the album, not just the favorited track.
Aha, you can follow tags -- they have a setting to follow tag highlights (whatever that means). The challenge is controlling your feed so you get the right number of notifications without being overwhelmed.
If anyone is following mine, I pretty much ignore everything that costs more than $5 and probably even $3. Alas, even with this rule, I've bought 25 in the last 3 days!
I think those numbers can only be seen by the person signed into the site. Mine are at over 1500 views and nearly 200 plays.
1249 and 641 but as I say, how much of that is me? My ratios are better than yours nah nah nah! (This is a sad ass joke just in case it doesn't come across as one.)
I don't know how all that works, but I don't listen to anything thru my Bandcamp profile page, so I have to believe that it's other people. Even the album pages themselves: I listen to just enough to know that I like something before getting it - and sometimes, with full label buys, I don't listen to many at all, so...
Anyway, this all only means something if you're married to the numbers you receive.
@rostasi and @Germanprof have watched your exchange with interest. Would appreciate your advice on who would be good to follow on Bandcamp bearing in mind my love of Prog Rock.
I have a bunch e individual artists that do not necessarily send emails. Some labels/artists have really figured out/invested in the marketing tools of bandcamp FAR more than others. Some of the ambient labels are very good at it and have very regular communication and periodic special offers. Moonjune and Tiger Moth Tales are both quite aggressive with communication via bandcamp. Cuneiform too. So is Antony Kalugin (Karfagen). The rest (and a bunch of other single artists I could name) much less so. I included in the list ones from my follows that I seem to remember sending me update emails, but not necessarily special deals.

Very true, but I do stream a lot through my page even though I have downloaded everything that I bought; doing so now in fact - which is why I don't trust the numbers.
Yeah, maybe if I tried doing that and then checking if the numbers increased by one. One thing I’d like to do is listen to someone else’s collection on shuffle. I’ve wanted to do that for years - especially if I’m doing something around the house and get in the mood for someone’s collection (or my own).
Also, I’ve realized that I could run an all-day radio station thru “radio.co” of nothing but BC purchases if I choose to do so.
For some reason, in the last couple of days I seem to be getting an email advice every time somebody posts on the "Flash Bandcamp Sale" discussion but not on any of the others.
Please could somebody tell me how to stop this happening as I get enough emails every day as it is!

Go to your profile, look for the little dropdown top right and select "edit profile" then find "Notification Preferences" in the menu on the left and see what you have checked.
Also possibly relevant: try looking at the little star at the top right of the thread - the bookmark button - and see if you have it turned on (yellow is on, white is off, click to toggle). (There is an option in the preferences for getting emails when people post to discussions you have bookmarked).
It's Bandcamp Friday as Bandcamp waive their fees and it's 30% off everything for 24 hours here at Fantasy Enhancing. There are no physical items for sale until we are back up and running in Italy. For now enjoy the digital.
Dear Flaming Pines followers, … Of course don't forget tomorrow is Bandcamp Friday and we will be lowering the cost of all our recent CDs to $7. The new one by Corder & Yantis recently picked up some radio play on the BBC so is winning some fans
For those of you who are the hardcore music diggers, you probably have already noticed, but in case you haven't, this is a quick announcement to let you all know that we have decided to make all downloads on Bandcamp FREE/PAY WHAT YOU WANT!
...and this isn't just for tomorrow's Bandcamp Friday, this is forever. You can download anything on our Bandcamp for free. We encourage to explore all our releases!
Why in the heck would we do this you ask???
Well it's simple. One of our core principles over here at Inner Ocean is truly just to share great music and make it as easy as possible to share. We aren't trying to devalue our releases by making them free, but instead we want as many people to listen as possible. Plus anyone can stream anything they want for free these days anyways, so for those of you who are old school and still want the downloads, go nuts!
Have a great Bandcamp Friday! If anyone discovers some radical Bandcamp gems, drop us a line and show us what you're digging. We're always looking to grab new tunes and show support back to other artists.
