Why yes I am listening to NEW My Bloody Valentine.

    Craig
  • @craig: Dude! I totally need the blow by blow!
  • Found it streaming at The Guardian. Similar songs to Loveless, but with about 1/3 the reverb. The use of note bending is much clearer, giving it a Harry Partch at the Pops feel.
  • BT - The image is also the link to purchase. It's insanely expensive ($16 for the download only), but it's new MBV, so they can charge pretty much whatever they want.

It's quite good so far. Definitely smoother than Loveless.

    Craig
  • craig: I've got the stream going. There are three songs I really love-- Only tomorrow, Who sees you, and In another way--and one I despise--New You, which sounds like a U2 rip-off. I really like the chords progression on In Another Way and how the various techniques and melodies pull it together.

    - Thanks Simon, it was Awesome !
  • BT - It's going to take a few more listens before I really get a handle on it, but it's good. It's certainly not Loveless, but it shouldn't be.

An excellent early review is up at The Quietus.

    Craig
  • craig -- I don't agree with the review. I rather like the album, but it's more ragged and direct than it's predecessors. It doesn't sound as much like a strange music beaming in from the ether as four people playing earnestly. Take "Only Tomorow," which the reviewer describes as "gauzy." Whereas it has the distinctive MBV distortion, most of the stacked reverbs have been stripped away. What's revealed is a precise technique on the tremolo bar, finding interesting notes just below the main chords.

Excellent set. DeJohnette really pushes Scofield, making perhaps my favorite record by Scofield.

Wow! Doofy called this "a monster" a few months ago. That's an understatement. I think almost everyone here would like this.

A sleeper from last year, great electronica with a mix of English whimsy.
  • Tapestry - Carole King
  • I am still generally limited to CDs for a few more days, until I unpack my computer, so I am going through some older ones. Just played Bridge over Troubled Water, now onto Bookends, probably my favourite Simon and Garfunkel album.

Finally got this intriguing all-star project and giving it a first spin.
Living by Lanterns brings together rising stars from Chicago and New York: Greg Ward (alto sax), Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet), Ingrid Laubrock (tenor sax), Tomeka Reid (cello), Mary Havorson (guitar), Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Joshua Abrams (bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Mike Reed (drums, electronics). The tunes on Old Myth/New Science were written by co-leaders Reed and Adasiewicz, based on an archival rehearsal tape by Sun Ra from 1961. That tape contains no compositions per-se, but there are a lot of stream-of-consciousness ideas and some of these ideas were teased out, hugely expanded upon and turned into the pieces heard here.
  • Sounds fascinating Doofy. Those early S and G albums are short, now onto Parsley, Sage etc
