What was funny to me about this is not that '80s music is bad,' but that the list was that it was so ridiculously MOR. Like, damn, did you never even see a Flock of Seagulls video? To this day, I listen to lots of 80s pop. A mid-80s Stray Cats show (opening act The Waterboys, as I recall) remains one of the funnest concerts I have ever attended.
I kind of forgot about Lionel Richie...he had the Midas touch for a while there. It was when I started running into slightly younger people who were Journey and Van Halen fans when I realized it's all about what pop music was playing when you were a kid, not whether it was good or not - !
But then, the 80s was not a great decade for pop music in general.
I am with luddite, the 80s were a great decade, and much more interesting that present day pop music (a judgment that of course has nothing at all to do with my age). That's not to say I ever want to hear anything on that list again. Thomas Dolby on the other hand was genuinely creative for a while.
Lionel Ritchie was one of the stars of Glastonbury this year, and his Greatest Hits album has been the top selling album here for a couple of weeks since then. I must admit though that I have not joined that particular bandwagon!
I may be pointing out the obvious, but just in case the term is lost on North Americans, that "crossing matron" is known as a "lollipop lady" in British English, due to the shape of her staff of office.
