BT - apologies for the snow; it's us. Whenever my wife travels in February, she brings our local snow with her. In the 90's Philadelphia had a record snowstorm that shut down the city for a week. She was there. 2010 blizzard of the century in DC? We were there. This week we happen to be visiting NC. Sorry. It seems warm to us though...
- "Pierre-Yves Mace is a young French composer - he was born in 1980 - who has already released four albums on famous labels such as Tzadik and Sub Rosa. Miniatures - Song Recycle is his second album for the parisian imprint Brocoli, following the acclaimed Passagenweg. Miniatures - Song Recycle, as the title suggests, alternates musique concrete studies and songs in the form of lieder, where the voice is made of recycled, chopped and transformed a cappella vocals from YouTube, accompanied by the composer/pianist. Pierre-Yves Mace lives in Paris and has been working with musicians Sylvain Chauveau, ON, Rainier Lericolais, That Summer, Minizza, Louisville, Quatuor Pli, writers Mathieu Larnaudie, Philippe Vasset, Christophe Fiat, contemporary artists Hippolyte Hentgen, Ga
Jacco Gardner - Cabinet of Curiosities. eMu suggested this to me, describing the album as in the Syd Barrett, Zombies, early Floyd tradition. I would say that description is accurate, maybe less drug-addled that Syd Barrett, but certainly of the same spirit. If you played this album without knowing it was a 2013 release, you would probably guess it was from 1969.
Edit: The album on Bandcamp, but no streaming. Looks like it is on spotify, if you want a sample.
@greg, it is just the third recording by that line-up, the others being CatnMouse (2000) and Class Trip (2003). Class Trip is available from Emu, don't see Cat'n'Mouse there but it is on 7digital.
- "Pierre Bastien (born Paris, 1953) post-graduated in eighteenth-century French literature at University Paris-Sorbonne. In 1977 he built his first musical machinery. For the next ten years he has been composing for dance companies and playing with Pascal Comelade. In the meantime he was constantly developing his mechanical orchestra. Since 1987 he concentrates on it through solo performances, sound installations, recordings and collaborations with such artists as Pierrick Sorin, Karel Doing, Jean Weinfeld, Robert Wyatt or Issey Miyake.
Pierre Bastien played first in some collective bands (Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods, Effectifs de Profil), and with the Dominique Bagouet Dance Company.
Around 1986 he started participating in Pascal Comelade's Bel Canto Orquesta. At the same time he created - and literally built - his own orchestra called Mecanium : an ensemble of musical automatons constructed from meccano parts and activated by electro-motors, that are playing on acoustic instruments from all over the world.
" A composer's dream : a fail-safe orchestra at one's fingertips obeying ever so gently to his every command : a timeless sounding orchestra, both futuristic and slightly dada, conjuring ancient traditions in its surprisingly sensuous music. This is, in a nutshell what Pierre Bastien's "Mecanium" is all about, a daydream of sorts that he has successfully pursued since 1976. The musicians of his orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic. " (Michel F. C
Bandcamp: - "Soundpiece is a soundinstallation in the public space of the Schouwburgsquare in Rotterdam and covers an area of 30 by 30 meter through 32 speakers. It can be heard across the entire Schouwburgsquare at limited volume.
WORM invited the composers Machinefabriek, Pierre Bastien and Dyane Donck/Daisy Bell to compose a piece for this. The results are three soundartworks/tape compositions that are made for public space, but are impressive as isolated piece of art as well. Something that stands out as well, is the different approaches of the three composers. The pieces were played at fixed times at the Soundpiece installation, for a month at the end of 2011."

Going deep in the Blue Note catalog for this interesting old album - Music for a 1959 off-Broadway show about heroin addiction among jazz musicians.
