I've been living off-and-on with that C93 album for about 8 months now.
I'm usually not much of a lyrics guy, so that takes from it a huge amount
of its "meaning," but the atmosphere hits right at times and that's when
I've always been the most comfortable with C93. Early albums, like Dogs Blood Rising,
worked wonders as a musical bed for other audio bits when I used to do free-form radio.
If only there wasn't this irritating contingent of enamored psychophants (my spelling),
but, I suppose, that kind of thing can be ignored once the headphones/speakers switch on.
greg, I'm gonna listen to Simon Nicol and Fairport Convention this afternoon
in honor of your birthday, since both he and you are 64 today. [This, after I finish
running some special software on my iTunes batch]. Happy birthday!
I'm not much of a lyrics guy either and frankly, I have next to no clue what David Tibet is on about but I'm totally in love with his burning passion.
- And as a Danish person, I can to some extent turn off the translation mode in my brain.
Hmmm. I confess I almost gave up after the first track, but either the effect is cumulative or the second comes together more for me - starting to get it more now. I read the lyrics and I have no idea what he is on about either.
- My Goodness ! . . . Scary stuff.
Without really knowing what I'm talking about, it seems to me that David Tibet is in a much more healthy mental state on the later albums.
Many thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday. As part of the celebrations we went to see Seth Lakeman last night at our local theatre - brilliant!!
@Rostasi - I hadn't realised Simon Nichol was born the same day as me! I did share my birthday with Margaret Thatcher, although she was born 25 years before me.
@ greg: for vegetarians, there's also the very helpful cookbooks of Mollie Katzen who turned 64 yesterday as well.
Funny that Thatcher and Lenny Bruce were born on the same day in 1925. Not sure of the significant connect (??)
Happy to spread the love, Prof. I love the immediacy of that recording, I imagine the phone just sitting on top of the piano. One critic named it his jazz album of the year, as I recall.
Another favorite from a year or two back
Just to add, that Jayne Mansfield LP cover is one of the saddest images I have ever seen. The "busts," ugh
Ian William Craig - A Turn of Breath
New name to me - really interesting new release. Like the Ambrose Field Being Dufay album in places, but with more distortion. Recommend a listen.
