Listening to my old Limited Edition Soul Coughing vinyl single (2 remixes of "Super Bon Bon" and live versions of 2 songs at an old defunct Twin Cities radio station) on my brand new turn table. Haven't listened to this thing in years and years!
I have spent 14 hours on the highway since Monday lunch, and invested the bulk of it in listening alternately to Monk and Ellington, with a focus on the 50s. I feel like I learned a lot, made real headway with how to listen to each. Started noticing connections and developments. Began getting "inside" some of the Ellington more; just a short while back I would have said (may actually have said) that the band stuff was not my corner of jazz, but some of that Ellington stuff is starting to sound essential. "Happy-Go-Lucky Local" gives me chills. And that bounces me back and helps me (alongside the reading I'm doing about Monk) to hear what Monk is doing.

Very excited to be seeing him next month. Apparently he'll be telling stories in addition to singing, so it should be fantastic.

Bummer on Gil Scott Heron, though. Not that surprising, though, given what he went through during his life.

Reminds me off Sophie and Peter Johnstone, a brother and sister duo who used to be on John Peel's show.

If only all my studying had been this much fun.
Ain't that the truth. I'd rule the world if I'd enjoyed all my studying as much as I do music studies.
