Recent re-release of 1960 album by Fania. Yo soy un tonto completo for any review like this:
Perhaps the greatest album that percussionist Sabu Martinez ever issued is also one of the greatest Latin jazz albums in history...what sets Jazz Espagnole apart from virtually every other Latin jazz date is that this music is neither a Latin jazz album in that Latin rhythms are superimposed over standard jazz arrangements or a jazz-Latin album whose arrangements are subservient to Latin rhythms. All 11 cuts are stomping, moving, steaming, and grooving sambas, descargas, Afros, boleros, cha chas, mambos, sons, etc. The jazz improvising that does take place is authentic, grooving harmonic interplay based on not against the rhythmic considerations and fugue figures.
- "A lovely album of cello/voice/electronics compositions by Hildur Gudnadottir recorded live at the Music Research Centre (University of York) in January of this year. Touch's press release notes that the original live recordings have not been edited as "to be faithful to time and space." The effect of this move is the establishment of a sense of intimacy and even immediacy in these glacially moving string compositions. The album begins with a brief string prelude before the centerpiece, "Allow The Light" takes center stage. Thirty-five minutes in length, the piece is really quite beautiful, with angelic, clarion vocals eclipsing beautiful string arrangements for cello. Midway through the piece its initial frailness gives way to a more spectacular and assertive movement, building to a frenzied mass of bowed strings and booming electricity clouds. Impressive and immersive listening, and typically top-notch presentation by Touch."

Its kinda funny and sad at the same time (more sad than funny, actually) that people keep masturbating to Random Access Memories, while albums like Silicon Basilica by Minneapolis, Minnesota duo Comanche exist. Tracks like Everymans Balance could be easily placed on RAM and people would have their heads cut off to believe its Daft Punk. Except Comanches album sounds way fresher and ripe with more ideas, borrowing from many more genres, while skillfully escaping their limitations and trappings.
YMMV, but then RAM sounds like a retread to me. Certainly quite good for the price ... FREE!
Buildings are a Twin Cities band who are currently on tour where their transmission blew out followed by someone breaking into the rental and stealing stuff. So they are out about $4,500 on the tour. It's noise rock and not for everyone, but if you're at all interested, the image is a link to their Bandcamp. They could use it right now.
English proleterian cabaret? I'm not sure what to call this mixture of theater, folk music, and social awareness. Apparently, Mikron Theatre Company have been around for decades, performing in ad hoc locations. Fun music. NYOP

Simple, but rather enjoyable. Not sure if I could write about it. Might give it another listen or two.
