It's Columbus Day here in the U.S. and, while any day is a good one to play this one, today is especially apropos. Peter Rowan, formerly one of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, released "Awake Me in the New World," 20 years ago, but there's a timeless quality to it. It is a themed album revolving around Pulcinella, Christopher Columbus' cabin boy on his 1492 voyage. Not a bluegrass album at all, but a fine album with world beats throughout, featuring congas and Latin-influenced tunes.
@Kez - sorry, it is Amazon UK, I assumed only Lowlife was interested as they can only be downloaded in the UK. Glad you found the Bright Young Folk worthwhile, it is the place where I find out most about new folk releases. Thanks for the Hannah James & Sam Sweeney album - new to me, so I'll follow up.
Seaworthy & Taylor Deupree
Didn't jump on this immediately when it came out, but have been listening in and growing to like it and finally bought it. Very relaxing.
ETA, lol, emusic has it tagged as "rock". A rock in a zen garden maybe.
Many thanks again to whoever posted this first (was it amc2?) - there are some tracks I don't care for, but a number that I really like a great deal. I am greatly enjoying tracks 10-12 at the moment. I think this is going to get slimmed down in my collection to an EP that I might actually play quite a bit.
