Guitar wizard Nick Didkovsky full speed ahead . . . - "Cuneiform has collaborated with two members of the Bone trio guitarist Nick Didkovsky and drummer John Roulat to release a benefit album to help the family of Bone's third member: bassist Hugh Hopper, who died of leukemia in 2009. Hugh was known to many as the legendary bassist for Soft Machine. The album is called 'The Gift of Purpose,' and features a live concert that Bone performed at Baltimore's Orion Sound Studios on Feb. 16, 2008, during Hopper's last tour of the States, in addition to a bonus track by Didkovsky, Roulat, Colin Marston (Behold....the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice) and Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine, etc)."
Another Matador release I slept on - largely because I never saw the appeal in Kurt Vile before. But I really like this so far. Now I'm really pissed I missed that sale...
The only surprising aspect of Denai Moores full tilt pelt towards mainstream success is that her seemingly simple music is so dense with echoes of other, far less straightforward artists. Certainly, her pure yet rich voice is instantly reminiscent of Carole King and Feist but the jagged phrasing and little catches also suggest a familiarity with Cat Power, while the music, all bruised, skewed and forlorn, kicks up a dust-storm of Iron & Wine-esque melancholia. She may have arrived in East London by way of Jamaica but Moores method has much more to do with a very Southern kind of madness

So many highly rated albums from Matador this year that I missed.

I heard a track on the radio whilst going to do the school run, needed to play the rest when I got home!

If I'd bought this before I'd created by top 25 for the year, this would certainly have been on it!

Liz Frencham's One: The Living Room Sessions, vol. 2
Jazz interpretations of popular songs -- just voice and upright bass. A wonderful little treat. NYOP
eta: I love this version of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning.
Very skillful jazz'ish female singer-song writing with occational scat singing.
- A bit too pleasant to my ears.
- I tend to agree . . .
