Well, Jasmine Guffond's Yellow Bell reminded me it was time to go through my SFL and try to whittle it down some. I had 1028 albums, including 2 blank pages, saved. The trouble is that I keep finding newer releases from some of the artists that I had saved and as I clear off one another is added. Oh well, remembering the past keeps me looking forward to the future. Takehisa Kosugi - Catch Wave (1975)
Spent most of my listening time with this this weekend; till the battery on this player ran out, now back to it. Working off a 152 track folder. I know there are more; I think I even have more, but this is enough just now. Not that I don't love it...
This will end up somewhere on my 2016 list. Very composed (in both senses of the word) music by pianist Guillermo Klein for a big ensemble of big talents
At the moment I feel like a spaceship that just did a slingshot around a gravity well, hurtling in a new direction that was nevertheless caused by explainable forces. I just spent a couple of weeks spending down some booster credit mostly on 1950s/1960s jazz and thinking, 'you know, in the end I really like the melodic stuff,' then I read the avant jazz thread on the emusic board, revisited that Wobble/Parker Passage to Hades album (which is brilliant), found a bargain on Leaps in Leicester, and am now hurtling joyously off into the Evan Parker galaxy (while procrastinating badly on the 30+ essays I have to grade this weekend).
I am not always the biggest fan of free jazz, but there is something about Parker's playing that immediately makes sense in my head. (So maybe I have not always found the right free jazz.) I still have a real sense of wonder that my ears/brain can find music and delight in, say, both Evan Parker and Coleman Hawkins alongside, say, Pjusk, Mono, and Vivaldi.
I really like this duo with the piano - does anyone know if Parker has done other piano/sax recordings? Then:
ETA: Loving this.
Prof there's this: psi 04.02 STAN TRACEY & EVAN PARKER "Suspensions and Anticipations" (2003)
which I have here somewhere and remember enjoying. Stan Tracey is more associated with Brit Jazz of the 1960's, whereas Evan came up a few years later with Evan obv. a free player. So it's someone playing with someone half a generation older and in a different idiom. Psi is Evan's own label btw.
@djh, thanks, I just went looking for that one but am turning up a blank at emusic, youtube, and spotify. I'll add it to the 'things to look for harder when I have time' list and see if I can find a way to hear it.
