  • I hope the freight contained good things.
Look I'd only just got out of bed! "blush".
  • The vague fuzzy language brings to mind when Amazon bought Amie St. - wasn't there something about improving stuff in all that too? Then it disappeared beneath the waves. Didn't Apple do that to somebody too? But then neither emu or 7digital is an Apple or Amazon so who knows.
  • Sounds to me like there will be jump leads running from the server stack at the emusic emusic offices to a generator at the 7digital offices.

    Apple did it to Lala.

(What an odd sentence. Sounds like nighttime secrets of the teletubbies).

There was a time when there would have been a hundred responses to this news over at the other board by now. I wonder whether Triple Play will just ditch the emusic message board at some point. It already almost seems as if they are discouraging people from using it to communicate by being more responsive on other platforms.
  • You might be right. However, it does seem to fit my suspension that the old eMusic staff is mostly gone and the Triplay staff don't have the resources to monitor any channels other than what they already were.

7digital does have a community board:
    https://help.7digital.com/hc/en-gb/community/topics/200350301-General-Discussion

Oddly there is nothing there. Unless you have to sign in to see anything. Any of you guys that are 7digital members want to put up a test post and see what happens?

My thought is that if the 7digital platform offers it, eMusic might use it. I agree with you that the old eMusic message board will not survive the re-launch.
  • "Jamie" is still there today, at least to announce an outage. I wonder if "Jamie" is actually a person or the name they settled on for whoever is posting anything from the emusic staff.
  • I've long suspected the latter....
  • I now see that this news was released from "http://about.7digital.com/", which is a B2B provider of internet music/radio, etc.  That's who the deal is with, not the 7digital music store.  If you want to deliver music to your customers, 7digital will set you up. Eg, it looks like their clients include some of the mobile phone companies, retail brands doing music promos, and even Guvera and Sirius.  http://about.7digital.com/services

Huh. So does that mean it's not so much 'emusic accesses 7digital store catalog' as 'emusic uses company to manage catalog rights that also manages 7digital store catalog rights'?

ETA, it has to be a bit more than the way I just put it because they are talking about adding classical tagging and FLAC, presumably as already implemented at 7digital.

Good point @Doofy However, 7digital appears to completely own the 7digital store. Seems odd to compete with all your B2B clients with your own fairly high profile store.
  • OK, I totally didn't have to go look up what B2B means. Honest.
  • To me at least this helps explain why there never seems to be much effort to sell stuff at the 7digital store. It's less, "We sell fruits and vegetables at our produce stand," more like, "We're a major distributor of fruits and vegetables, may as well open a little produce stand out front."

    B2B = business to business

The related term is B2C, business to consumer; which is what eMusic is trying to do.
  • @Lowlife just want to congratulate you - that news report on 7digital was a very significant find. I think we all would have missed it if not for you; frankly another negative mark against Triplay's communication skills. Good job!
  • Thanks data guy I work in the marketing industry and its amazing what you pick up when trawling the net.
  • Yes, thanks much, Lowlife. And for the civil conversation about it on here. It did not go quite as well on the other board. (And the general lack of interest suggests to me that board is really deader than ever. Even a couple of years ago I cannot imagine that news that FLAC, new cataloging, and an expanded selection may be coming would have attracted minimal response. There's not much left but the complaints now.)

I rarely look at the board over there now, because it just seems to be complaints much of the time. A few years ago I used to download fairly regularly from 7 digital but haven't used it for a couple of years. To me they are a bit like emusic, in that the major players are Apple and Amazon, followed by Google Play. A total merger of emusic and 7digital (I know that is not currently part of the move) could make a lot of sense commercially just to keep up with the big players.

  • Whoa - someone at eMu finally took a look at the thread:

"Just to address a couple of the concerns here. This is not a "merger." This will not effect member pricing. It will also not mean a return to the majors.
    -Jamie
    eMusic Moderator"

  • That's good news on the pricing front; I'm indifferent on the majors.
  • Four days ago I got an email about the Emu app. Tonight I made the download to my phone and have (I think) sync'd all my 14K + (yes it's gone up) purchases. I wondered if anyone else had tried the app and what their experience was? I'm already getting bonus £££ from just using MyMusic on the pc as with some clunkiness it is still a hell of a lot easier than finding the files on one of my external drives. I may even eventually get enough usage out of Emu to validate the not trifling cost of my monthly sub.

@djh I'm not sure what you meant by "getting bonus £££" so I logged in to give it a try. I downloaded the synch app. Couldn't get it to install (on Windows 7); not a good sign. Not to mention that I had to enter the site through a sub-link in order to avoid the endless spinning dial.

Now that I've poked around the site logged in; when I go back to the site front door I get a URL with a "/app" and everything is good (sort of speaking). The user interface doesn't do much for me but most Iikely it's designed more for mobile than web. I can't get the account tab to open up; not sure what that means.

As clunky as the cloud interface is, the store design (laid out virtually the same) really does them a disservice. It took a lot of banging around to determine that they in fact seem to have a good sized catalog of albums. The prices however, do not seem appealing compared to eMusic.

Really hope that the 7digital platform is the future of eMusic rather than MyMusicCloud.

btw - did you see the "Invite Friends" promo? Bring in a ton of new users and you can get a whopping total of 5 (five) free songs!
  • @dataguy I just meant by £££ that I was finally getting value for money. I downloaded the Emu app on my Samsung Galaxy 5 no problems but searching your Mymusic is a hassle as after every play selection you go back to the start of the alphabet. I guess there is a playlist function - not something I normally use - further exploration over the weekend. I guess your Windows 7 is being eased out, my 8.1 won't last too much longer. Thanks for the reply I guess we need a few more experimenters before we find out where this will take us. I did get a normal credit renewal yesterday despite the plan name change which is good.
