L’Instant Donné is an instrumental ensemble based in Paris
devoted to the interpretation of contemporary chamber music. Since its
foundation in 2002, the ensemble has functioned as a collective, with a
fixed line-up of nine musicians, and has built its reputation upon high
quality chamber ensemble performances, by preference working without a
conductor.
L'Instant Donné has appeared at many leading venues and
festivals, including Festival d’Automne à Paris, Agora-Ircam (Paris),
Musica (Strasbourg), Wittener Tage and WDR3-Köln (Germany), CDMC-Madrid
(Spain), Musikprotokoll (Graz, Austria), Manchester International
Festival (UK), Luxemburg Philharmonie, and widely across Europe, and as
far afield as Morocco, Argentina, Brazil, Peru or South Africa.
ETA, you know, I often wonder how having come to jazz out of long engagement with electronic, ambient, and drone conditions what I hear. One thing I know, I often fixate on timbre more than melody. Archie Shepp, early or late, has to me just about the most interesting sound texture of any saxophonist I've listened to much. I find myself caring about that far more than whether he is playing free jazz or mainstream ballads. He is just fantastic at keeping me fascinated with the specific sound he is making at any given moment.
If you're on a Shepp marathon, you should check out his with collab with Jasper van't Hof, "The Fifth of May"...
Very different. Reviled in many jazz circles (justifiably), but I've always had a fondness for it. When I was younger, I remember it went well with Lovely Sunrise Daybreaks... both literally and acronymically.
