Start Here: A Beginner's Guide to the Forum

In case you are new to emusers, we are a little group of music enthusiasts that like finding and sharing music across all genres (especially stuff that is less well known to the general public) and discussing it without shouting or insults. This board originally started as an outgrowth of discussions on the old discussion board at the digital music service emusic.com, but emusers has no connection to emusic.

Here's a brief primer (with credit to an earlier version by @thomnottom) on the main threads that weave their way through our little board and where we most frequently hang out:

It's All About Me

Hello – If you are new, introduce yourself here and be welcomed!

 Current Listening

The bulk of the daily traffic happens on our “What are you listening to right now?” threads. The current one is Number 17 (but if we moved on and forgot to update this, look for a more recent one with “What are you listening to right now” in the title. It will be somewhere near the top.) This is where we post our current listening but it’s also a good place to make passing comments that others are likely to see. I’ll include a list of past threads at the end. We like to retire these threads some time after they go over 1000 posts.

 New Releases and discoveries

Another frequent and valued activity is posting news about new releases and other discoveries. The following threads focus on that from various angles:

Soundcloud, Bandcamp - New / Upcoming Releases, Announcements etc. – What it says, new release announcements from those services, especially ones with streamable samples.

Emusers standard lecture on good free stuff – a list of good music that can be downloaded legally for free.

New & Notable Releases – it’s hit and miss, but new releases that matter to one or another of us get posted here.

New & Notable Classical Releases – new releases….but classical.

Listen before it's gone (NPR, Spin, etc) - Brand new albums streaming free for a limited time (usually until release date).

Bandcamp Goodies – This sometimes overlaps with the free stuff thread, but is for any great finds on Bandcamp.

Throwing Punches at the Hurricane: Jazz at Bandcamp – Another bandcamp thread, but just for jazz.

Ubuweb Goodies – good things found at ubuweb.

Sales

Flash Bandcamp Sale If you see an album offered at a special price or free for a limited time, do the right thing and tell the rest of us. (Even if it is not on bandcamp - the sale threads are a little disorderly and here is as good a place as any.)

News

RIP - To discuss the recently deceased.

The News Room – things happening related to music.

Nostalgia for emusic (a bunch of us originally came here from there)

Freshly Dropped/Discovered over at eMu – things people found at emusic.com.

Well that may be the end of eMu for me – 77 pages (and counting) of discussion of why we might finally be leaving emusic.

What I Bought from Emusic Last Month – The quest to find good music at emusic.

Emusic Beta – It’s closer to Omega than Beta now, but this is more emusic discussion.

There’s more. We also complain about iTunes, post cover versions, youtube clips, slices of nostalgia, and lyrics, and a lot more. Do join in.

Are we unable to upload a photo?  Or are there specific requirements for doing so?  I'm trying to upload a JPEG (size ~450kb) and failing at it.
    Perhaps that functionality is disabled.
More specifically, an image from my desktop.
  • It should be possible…
  • Copying the image and pasting it in, seems to work for me.
  • Upload, copy/paste, nothing is working.
  • I can copy from an online image - say a discogs image, but if I download that image (a jpeg) and then try and copy it here it will not work and never has for me. FWIW the browser I'm using is Firefox. Using the paste function in the dialogue box doesn't work either.
  • Hey! This sounds familiar!  :D
  • Are we the same thing?  I can drop & drag an image from a google image search or from, say, a bandcamp page.  I just can't do it from my desktop.  The difference, I imagine, is that the former method isn't really an uploaded image, but just a link to that image hosted on another site; the latter approach is to actually upload it to the emusers site.  It was something we could do previously, but I wonder if the recent upgrade changed that. Or, perhaps, changed the specifications for what is considered an acceptable file to upload.
  • Yes, that's been my problem since about the time of the upgrade. I always try to drag from my desktop because it causes problems for the host of the site if you just link to a hosted image. But a while back, I could no longer just drag and drop from my desktop and that's what I've been talking about since.
  • @eythian is the one who might know.
  • It's possible something has changed, but I've just got back from a Christmas eve dinner and drinks so I'll take a look tomorrow 😅

My bad.  I misunderstood your original post then.  Myself, when I was still using my egregiously out of date laptop a few months ago, I was experiencing the problem I misattributed to you- experiencing issues with the drop and drag from an image hosted on another site.
Is that true, by the way?  That it's a greater strain on a site if you link to an image hosted on another site instead of uploading the actual image?  For some reason, I thought the actual upload would be a greater strain on resources.

You don't want to link to a hosted image because it puts an enormous strain on the website hosting the image by unnecessarily using their bandwidth, potentially leading to increased costs for them and slower loading times for their users, especially if many websites are linking to their images; essentially, you're "stealing" their resources without contributing to their website. There are "ethical" concerns. Look up "hotlinking."

Looks like image uploading should be happy again - when upgrading the distro I'd forgotten to reinstall the graphics library that handles resizing and such.
Regarding hotlinking, while rostasi's points are quite valid, another consideration is that now you have a dependency on a third-party site and if that goes away, so do your images.
Just for interest's sake, there are about 1.7GB of images that have been uploaded here. That's a bit under 10% of the storage on this server, so that's pretty safe.
Also, sorry for the delay in fixing this - the quiet days I'd had planned ended up busy!
  • Yea! Thanks a bunch. Really no hurry on this - just dropping info for you to know whenever you had gotten a chance to get to it. It's the holidaze - everyone's running around cRaZy! Thanks again!
  • Thanks @eythian
Also thanks for the info on the image upload capacity.  That was my primary concern that, previously, stopped me from uploading (aside from those times when I want the image to act as a link, like to a Bandcamp page).

  • Nah, go for it. There are other things on this server too, so if it becomes time for me to add more storage, so be it.
