AMG says "the record acts as a veritable time capsule, taking the listener back to that tenuous transition point where late-'60s progressive rock and experimental psychedelia finally gave way once and for all to what is now considered the classic '70s hard rock sound. Indeed, it's this convoluted transformation process that simultaneously informs the album with its edgy, nervous energy and helps explain its mysteriously lasting appeal.......As for the bandmembers, their technical prowess and taut interplay drives...... into truly impressive realms of inspiration."
Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard - Saturations Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard (b. 1979) considers his work to be a basic research in realities working within the domains of imaginary & physical sound as well as other non-sonic media. Since 2012 Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard has experimented with creating music that lets the instruments transcend their inherent sonic norms and reappear in another form by way of multiplication of sound.....
A love letter to the wintry landscapes of the far northern arctic, this
album is a collection of reel-to-reel tape loops that aim to convey the
sense of stillness and solitude that can be found looking out upon snow
covered mountains.
Sorry for the lack of posts but this is a busy time at work, especially since it's my last busy time at work. Thanks for all the recommendations, tips, links to EOY lists and the rest.
This is hard to pin down - and that's why I like it a lot. A little bit Jade Warrior, a little bit Sheila Chandra, a little bit Beach Boys, a little bit Shoukichi Kina & Champloose, and more, meeting in Thailand, Okinawa, Mali, and other "exotic" lands without having the albatross of "world music" hanging around its neck. Good to see this one and only recording from this group re-released.
I love that Surman album, but I never could figure out why the title tune and the tune "Glancing Backwards" - both performed/written by him - have the same melody, but different names. "Glancing Backwards" is the one I grew up listening to.

Well, if the tapes of what would become Way Back When were lost for many years straight after the recording maybe that's why Surman re-recorded the tune later?
Yep Glancing Backwards, (which I have somewhere) was recorded two years later with a different band in 1971. Punningly titled by Surman as a nod to the "lost" session.
