Revisiting some old Bandcamp purchases that haven't been given enough love. This album by ex Zombi member also features Mary Lattimore's harp on several tracks.
I last played this the day I was given a special knee brace that proved both painful and useless. I'm playing it again now while doing physio on my half new knew. Nice and gentle like the exercises!
@Germanprof thanks for Happy Families Too and "Blancmange" which reminds me of Synth Pop, New Wave, New Romantics, Live Aid and the 1980s. My favourite band of the time (to be honest there weren't many as I was in denial after the sad, near obliteration of Prog by Punk at the end of the 1970s!) was Spandau Ballet and their album "True".
Having been somewhat disparaging about the 1980s, I shouldn't forget one of my all-time favourite albums "Diamond Life" by Sade from 1984.
I will never forget Sade serenading my two young daughters to sleep every night whilst on holidays with that fabulous, all-time classic song "Smooth Operator".
@Confused - you've been playing some of my favourite artists whist we have been on holiday. Jonn Mayall's Turning Point had a big influence on me musically when it was released, helping to move me on from the then typical group/band format. Joan Armatrading was a favourite back in the mid 70s and still is now. I first saw her, probably 1976/77, thinking of who I went with! The next time I saw her was 30 plus years later in a different millenia. I read an interview with her only a few weeks ago, still playing and recording in her 70s.
Nubya Garcia, a leading light in the British jazz scene is performing at the Proms tonight. For those who can get it it will be on BBC 4 on Friday evening. Am article about her, with a Youtube clip is at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-58112962. She is a superb young jazz saxophonist as the clip shows
@greg - As much as I'm enjoying going through my albums & tapes, I'm really missing hearing new sounds. Budget's a little tight right now and there's too many NYOP songs I can't afford to get. Still enjoying this retirement and I'll catch up on the new somewhere down the line. John McLaughlin
"Bonneville Road" by Magic Bus. Prog Rock from a band which was founded in 2010 but sounds firmly positioned in the 1960s/70s Canterbury era.
ProgArchives says "MAGIC BUS are a band that freely admits that they think they are still producing music of the psychedelic era of the 1960s and early 1970s. Their sound definitely conjures up early psychedelic jazz of Canterbury Scene bands CARAVAN, SOFT MACHINE and STEVE HILLAGE though it also takes inspiration from the psychedelia coming from the West Coast of the USA in the late Sixties (specifically JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, CROSBY, STILLS & NASH)."
"Stations" by Russian Circles, one of my favourite Post Rock bands.
AMG says "Chicago-based instrumental post-rock/metal trio Russian Circles create a complex clamor of sprawling guitars, propulsive drumming, and heavy bass lines."
Whilst ProgArchives says "Their sound consists of expansive guitar sounds created by guitarist Mike Sullivan's extensive looping and layering.....as well as heavily rhythmic drums and crushing basslines. They feature the cinematic soundscapes common to post-rock, but are not afraid to keep some sections heavy with a capital H".
From the Lyle Mays Estate comes a thirteen-minute "mini symphony" entitled Eberhard-a composition completed by Mays in 2009 and recorded in the months before his passing on Feb 10, 2020 with a large ensemble, including notable jazz names Bob Sheppard, Alex Acuña, & Bill Frisell. While Eberhard is a posthumous release, Mays was engaged in it's creation from beginning to end-serving as composer, arranger, performer (piano, keyboards, and synthesizers), and producer, and was actively involved in all recording and mixing sessions. Eberhard is a long-form, multi-section work that is Lyle's self-professed dedication to the great German bass player and composer Eberhard Weber, an influence that loomed large on Mays and his long-time collaborator Pat Metheny in the forming of their 11-time Grammy-Award winning Pat Metheny Group.
Locked away at home in Melbourne for 14 days Quarantine. Hence all my recent posts! And yes, I have had both doses.
