just downloaded Soda and his Million Piece Band
    an enjoyable genre ride through
raspy blue gypsy jumpers and swooners with saxes, fiddles, banjos, guitars and harmonica coming at you from all directions.

don't take my word for it....3 free songs here at artist website:

  • selfrisinmojo - thanks for the i.j. smith rec, there's some stuff there that sounds interesting. I also checked out the Soda samples, you're right about sounds coming at you from all directions and that Pig in the Can are not as smooth(production wise) as Little Axe, some of their stuff I really like while other tracks need more listening from me to feel the same about hopefully.

    Okay, here's my September additions:

    eMusic

Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass: What can I say about this ablum that hasn't already been said?
Mos Def - The Ecstatic: Some great songs on here, and other than one or two I could do without it is solid across the board.
of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping: I've always wanted more of their stuff, but this one isn't quite grabbing like I expected.
Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer: Great album. Thanks again to xtrev for finding a download of the last track without it costing me 5 nps.
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies: Another great album.
Bon Iver - Blood Bank: Not as good as For Emma, but that's a near impossible album to follow up.

    Amie Street

The Alarmists - The Overhead Left: A local favorite of mine. This album doesn't quite live up to their first couple, but it is still enjoyable.
The Wild Beasts - Two Dancers: I absolutely love this album. HIGHLY recommended.
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs: Not my favorite of their albums, but it is still good. I don't like them massing all of the jams at the end, though.
A Camp - A Camp: Got it for free and it has certainly been worth it! Just good pop music.
The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee: Fantastic, as I knew it would be.
The Rifles - Great Escape: Enjoyable britpop.
The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love: Get. This. Album.

  • My month just started a couple days ago. Here's what I've done so far...

    eMusic:

Cluster and Brian Eno - s/t
Jenny Scheinman - "Crossing the Field"
    Gabriela - "El Viaje"
    Trilok Gurtu - "Arkeology"

    Amie:
Miles Davis - "In a Silent Way" (original LP burn)
  • Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies: Another great album.

Cosign * 1000. Also, despite the lead singer's voice, I'm going to download that new Wild Beasts' album.
  • (After I (a) sweep through the massive cache of new arrivals on 10.06.09 and (b) cherry-pick what I don't have and want from Pitchfork's Best-Of-The-Decade list, that is).
  • I wasn't a fan of The Wild Beasts' singer's voice on the first listen, but it has seriously grown on me. I now actually rather enjoy it.

What all is hitting on the 6th? I know the new Mountain Goats, but beyond that I haven't really paid attention. As for Pitchfork, make sure you check out Lala. Most albums on the list are on sale, and while most are $5.99, some are as cheap as $1.99.

  • What all is hitting on the 6th?

    • The Clientele
    • The Mountain Goats
    • Califone
    • The Raveonettes
    • Lou Barlow

And, while eMusic is unfortunately not getting these titles, 10.06.09 is also the release date for new discs from

    • A Place To Bury Strangers
    • No Age (an EP)
    • Air

    . . . among others.
  • Mission Of Burma's new album is also supposed to hit on the 6th (don't know if it will hit emu on the 6th).
  • Grant Hart's new one, too (not on eMusic, sadly).

I'll try to limit it to highlights.

    Amazon.com:
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Break Up
    Monsters of Folk - S/T
    Muse - Absolution

    Amiestreet.com:
    A Camp - A Camp
Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement
    Wild Beasts - Two Dancers
    Unforscene - Fingers and Thumbs
    Inf - The Go Round
    The Rifles - Great Escape
Miles Davis - Jack Johnson, In a Silent Way, & My Funny Valentine

    eMusic:
    The xx - xx
    Grizzly Bear - Vecktamist
    The Bloody Beetroots - Romborama
    Rodrigo y Gabriela - 11:11
    FrankMusik - Frankisum
    Esperanza Spalding - Esperanza
    Polvo - Cor-crane Secret & In Prism
    The Fucking Champs - III
    Vanessa Daou - Zipless
The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through the Devil Softly

    Lala.com:
Elizabeth & The Catapult - Taller Children
A Fine Frenzy - Bomb in a Birdcage
    LCD Soundsystem - S/T
    Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts & Saturdays = Youth
    Hot Chip - The Warning
    Mastodon - Leviathan

    Semi-flexible layers of polycarbonate plastic:
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs

I'm thinking that Inf, RyG, The xx, The Big Pink, and Hope Sandoval are the highlights although Grizzly Bears' "Two Weeks" is one of the greatest songs ever written. Inf was a ridiculously lucky freebie at Amie Street that turned out to be incredible instrumental hip-hop. The YLT is very flawed, but still excellent. Lala is really helping me explore some great missed albums from this decade.

How is the Muse? I've heard the first single a couple of times and have really enjoyed it.

I find it interesting that you downloaded two albums titled S/T.

The M83 discs are great, BTW. Pastiche, I guess? But that's okay with me. The first, all pastel-y and shoegaze-y sound walls. The newest, like the soundtrack to a great, lost John Hughes brat-pack film from the 80s.
  • i've been trying to get thru the slew of free sampler's that frogkopf listed off amazon. some choice stuff.

have been holding off amie to see if about 4 things show up that i want...if no, i'll head back to emu for a 3 month spin.

  • That's actually not the new Muse but the one that came before Black Holes. It's not as good as that one, but I like it. Sometimes you really need big, bombastic, over the top rock. (I'm assuming you're joking about the s/t comment, or do you not know the shorthand?).

I am enjoying the M83 discs more with each listen. "Kim & Jessie" is such a wonderful song.
  • I was joking. Not a good joke, mind you, but a joke nonetheless.

I snagged the M83 - Saturdays=Youth last night. "Kim & Jessie is definitely a good song.

Some standouts from my downloading in the last month (mine refresh tomorrow, so I'm cherrypicking tracks today):

Sensacional Soul Vol. 1 and Sensacional Soul Vol. 2 - Latin soul compilation, some great instrumental tracks too.

The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows - I decided to I had to hear what Pitchfork called one of the best songs of the decade -- "The Rat" -- and I think they were right.

The Sounds - "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" (single) - I've been a fan for many years, since I found their first album in a cutout bin. Very '80s, the female singer reminds me a bit of Teri Nunn from Berlin.

PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) - Abundance - Hip-hop with that soulful Outcast feel to it. I like "Angels."

The Big Pink - A Brief History Of Love - Flavor of the moment? Don't know, but I did like some of the samples, especially those featuring soaring synths.

Ollabelle - Love "Before This Time." Lovelovelove it.

Office - Mecca - A rare full-album download because it sounded that good.

Mariachi El Bronx - I heard a story on NPR about The Bronx, a punk band, deciding to create a mariachi album, and darn if it's not excellent mariachi.
