  • Lala folds into iTunes.
    Amie Street folds into Amazon.
Limewire is teetering on the brink.
7digital deals come only once in a while.

Last year's eMusic debacle actually isn't so bad now. At least eMu is still expanding.

so so true, and can't be said enough.
  • thom - I've been pretty pessimistic about Guvera since the day DayTrip pointed it out. That said, my pessimism has grown by leaps and bounds over the last two weeks.

I give it two months, tops.

  • I guess this means that I can stop breaking out in a cold sweat at the thought of luddite taking my crown. Ever since they switched the drops to around 2-3 am in my time zone, I've rarely scored a freebie that brought in serious rec money.

I'll guess I'll have to reopen my emusic account, and reclaim my seat as king of the downloads......

I concur with the legal shark on Guvera - stick to the albums with few tracks is my advice ...
  • ARRRGH! It's gonna be hard to cashin/cashout over there methinks...

Um, wonder if their email is down as well?

    Hello all!
  • I think that's for people who don't think there's enough releases that interest them to spend the money on. Obviously until they get the site back up none of us can spend the money, but once it is running we should all be able to buy things like normal. At least that's the impression I got.
  • @Thom, I don't give 7dig enough credit. I find some good deals there, but those are always in genres that I dl less. Finding something I want there is usually painful. Moreover, I somehow feel I need to hold out in case another big sale comes at the end of the year.

@All: I doubt I'll feel the loss of Amie as much as the rest of you. I got a lot of free albums by staying up late--good albums, yes, but I don't think I would have bought them otherwise. I think I spent less than $100 in one and a half years. The first album a bought was Mother of Us All, an opera on New World. My first free album was AC Newman's Get Guilty. My favorite day is the Tru Thoughts drop: I received an e-mail early in the day that tipped me off to the impending drop. Recently I've been picking over the Jim Lauderdale albums. I guess my last great find will be the Minton Sparks spoken word, which was still free Sunday afternoon. What Amie lacked was a lot of the traditional music that I not just like, but that I also play repeatedly. Shanachie/Yazoo bolted sometime four month ago. After I get the Fela I want, I'll pick up some Palmetto, maybe Bardo Pond's Aminita, Workers Playtime, and Nostalgia 77's Songs for My Funeral.
  • Ooo, Nostalgia 77 is on there? I just recently heard them for the first time and was meaning to get some. Sounds like a good excuse.

Perhaps, but that statement was in reference to this post by chrispetescia:
@amiestreet is closing and apparently I have to burn the $90 in music credit I have there, asap?

I saw that someone over on emusic posted that they had limited time to download between now and 9/22, couldn't hurt to contact them if anyone has similar issues.

Not sure how they'll ever get the servers back in working condition with the amount of traffic that's going to be hitting them every time the site is up. Think I've got ~$35.00 in Recs + $20.00 in credit to use up. As long as the site is wonky I'm going to be dubious about even trying to cash in my Recs.
  • I think the real question is what will selffriskingmojo do now that his access to free obscure James Gang wannabes is going to dry up?
  • FWIW, Amie was "down for Maintenance" for at least the better part of a day over the week-end as I recall, but that was before it was under siege. I got 2 buys in this morning neither of which downloaded properly, no surprise there, before they went wonky. Just keeping the fingers crossed.
  • According to their twitterer, they expect to be back up today. Claims they are soooo close. Oh wait, they said "sooo close".

@Bad Thoughts - I haven't bought much from 7dig because the sales don't often match up with what I want either, but I have noticed an increased marketing campaign by them along with more aggressive pricing. Thanks for the reminder about Palmetto. I definitely rec Bardo Pond.

@Craig - There's a number of Nostalgia 77 release on Amie. I bought everything of theirs and probably half of Tru Thoughts. Still bummed about the day I was polishing off their catalog and someone else seemed to have caught on. A lot of albums skyrocketed in price while I was at lunch. Weird.

That reminds me of the other great loss - Labradour. I got a ton for free when they dropped, but forgot about them once I actually started buying credits. Then after a few purchases they disappeared. Frustrating.

I hope they aren't gutting the site of worthwhile content.

    It's baaaa-aaaack.

UPDATE: That didn't last long - wouldn't even process my order.
  • It's baack down.
  • It came up this morning and is working better than before the announcement. I managed to gorge myself on purchases and am cashing out recs like crazy. Sadly I have to go teach a class and cannot continue striking while the iron is hot.

Well something's missing - I used to have well over 10,000 songs under "my downloads" now I only have about 5800. I don't care so much about the songs as that I really wanted to see my final number. Oh well.

It's back, and crawling like an invertebrate puke that just got blasted with Raid. At this rate the legs will be pointing skyward again soon.

Edit: Now it's a blank white page. Far out, I always could use more of them.
  • I suspect that this will involve early morning forays to clear out downloads and pending credits. I popped in at 6AM EST and it was sluggish but managed to cash in my remaining recs and spend all but $0.02. Just shitty.
  • I'm down. I'm really down. I'm down.
How can you laugh when you know I'm down?

    Well, tahmorrah is another day.

    and Google! (link)
  • I remembered something that will really piss me of: that Pavement album was never fixed. Crap!

I stayed up late to get Bardo Pond, Billy Bragg, Steve Swallow (Histoire du Clochard), and a dozen Frank Kimborough tracks. That only cleared $13 of credit. Even late at night, the site was wonky, and it took forever to dl everything. If I get back on today: some NWCRI (Leon's Indigena and Connie Beckley), maybe David Alvin, maybe Jim Avett, maybe Kingsbury Manx. Still $25 to go.
  • thom - Nice phrasing on that headline.

I was able to get on long enough to purchase a Belleruche album on Tru Thoughts, but couldn't cash any RECs yet, let alone DL anything.

  • Argh! I finally managed to make some purchases last night and this morning, but it went down again before I could d/l anything!

I'm assuming it will become a tad more stable over the days as people clear out their credits (2 weeks is still obviously too short of a time). If so, I'm still considering adding more to buy out some back catalogs of certain labels...
  • That Belleruche album is great.
  • Amie totally blew off every CS request I made over the last few months, including one about that Pavement set.
  • What? Workers' Playtime was only the bonus tracks, not the full album. Now I'm pretty pissed. I would only make this mistake if it were three in the morning and I had no choice but to blow through by credits as quickly as possible.
  • I'd actually never heard of Belleruche until yesterday when I was listening to a new free sampler from Amazon. Immediately knew I needed more, then saw they were on Tru Thoughts. Perfect!

That's a ballsy move. ;-) Their site stability and horrendous consumer support leaves me very wary about giving them any more money than I have already.
  • >>Amie totally blew off every CS request I made over the last few months, including one about that Pavement set.

Yeah, I got no response to my last several complaints - like the first track King of the Willow Tree from Sofia Talvik's Acoustic Florida being only 0:17 seconds long - but I let it slide. Apparently the neglect was not the result of having hand in cookie jar, as I thought it might be.
  • @elwoodicious - I'll only do it if the site issues do clear up by the end of the weekend and prices for the albums I'm interested in stay relatively unchanged. If I'm still struggling to cash out my recs on Monday that won't really be an option.
