OK I only joined Amie Street cause all the cool kids were doing it way back when.
That's funny! Same here.
Apparently, I joined 22 Sept 2009, got Toys in the Attic as part of a sign-up deal, and I have a $1 credit and no street cred whatsoever.
So Frogkopf, if I've never heard any Calla and could only pick up one of their albums available on Amie, which one would you recommend? I just added $15 to my account via the Sony 50% off link to grab a few odds and ends.
Any kranky or MOSZ recs out there? I picked up the Aix Em Klemm and Pan-American self-titleds and already own all of the Low, Bowery Electric, White Rainbow and September Collective.
They're all good. Every Calla fan will have a different answer. If you like more soundscapes then gp with their their first album Calla, if you like their more pop sound, the other end of the spectrum is Televised, the other albums falling in between those two. They all have that 3 A.M./Spaghetti Western vibe to them.
Yancey loved the first album but thought that Televised was too polished. He did like the other two listed here quite a bit. I like them all, and in fact Televised is the album I've listened to the most. You really can't go wrong with any of them, as they are all strong albums. I would pick them all up considering how cheap they are - if you got 50% off Sony credits, you would be getting 4 really good albums for a total of about $6 real money.
For any flatpicking fans, I could just tell from the album cover that this wasn't in fact an album by a group I never heard of but another mislabelled Various Artists, namely :
Delaware Tan (David Grier & Tim Stafford)
Upside Down and Backwards (Jeff White & Jim Hurst)
Jibaro Hoedown (Eric Thompson & Jim Nunally)
Song for Emily (Kenny Smith & David Grier)
Chestnut Flats (Tim Stafford & James Shelton)
Zobern (Jim Hurst & Curtis Jones);
Brittlebrush (Peter McLaughlin & Scott Nygaard)
Mt. Dora Waltz (Jeff White & Bryan Sutton)
North Fork of the Hulston (James Shelton & Chris Jones)
Winslow (Scott Nygaard & Eric Thompson)
Jordan's Reel (Wyatt Rice & Kenny Smith)
Wit's End (Chris Jones & Brad Davis)
Gloria's Waltz (Jim Nunally & Peter McLaughlin)
Velvet Hammer (Brad Davis & Wyatt Rice)
Django & Al (Curtis Jones & Bryan Sutton)
Any kranky or MOSZ recs out there? I picked up the Aix Em Klemm and Pan-American self-titleds and already own all of the Low, Bowery Electric, White Rainbow and September Collective.
Kranky: I really like the couple of Hammock albums I own. You probably already know about Labradford, if not, start downloading. I just got that Brian McBride album and really like it; it's closer to the new age electronics part of the spectrum, lacks much of that soft industrial that many Kranky albums possess. Greg Davis is someone to get, but the album you need to buy isn't on Amie, so forget it. I've always been a sucker for Windy & Carl, but they can get a bit boring from album to album; "Consciousness", IMO, is the one to get. Roy Montgomery is an interesting fellow. Similar to ECM's Steve Tibbetts, but with more drone. That "Temple IV" album is pretty good. I'm probably going to spend my last credits on something by Loscil, but I'm still listening to figure out which.
I had some notes on the Amie Kranky page, but having just moved into a new place, nothing is where I remember it. I went through the entire page and listened to everything and took notes so I wouldn't have to scour the page again. Looks like I may be my own worst enemy. I need a secretary.
Bored, 3 cents to my name, flipping through freebies. Found 31 Bars by Ariel. Recorded when he was 8 and a half. Classical pianist getting into free jazz.
Dang! I missed it by about 20 minutes on each side. Did get it for about $5 Amie money and used up most of the rest of my RECs, so at least I will make about $3 back in credit.
I've got a bunch of eMu to download, about 130 tracks to get from Limewirestore within the next 10 days before they expire, the Guvera onslaught to pick out, and almost $200 in amie street credit to use up by next week.
Can't believe more is still rolling into Amie Street. Got the new Of Montreal for free - actually paid for more credits so that I could get more RECs. How ridiculous is that? But I've already built up another 5 bucks of REC money today. I'll be able to clear out some more of my back catalog, go nuts on Guvera, cherry pick the new releases on eMu and Amazon, and then go into a music-induced coma for the rest of the year.

SRM, I'll miss all your recs for free albums on amie.
Tried to grab one today and still getting the dreaded "Cannot process order" error with quick buy and cart checkout. The rest of you seem to be doing ok with Amie, but she just doesn't seem to like me. Musta forgot to give her a gift on Valentine's day or something. Now she's not returning my calls. Didn't even get the email with Amazon credit.
hoosfoos,
I've been getting that "Cannot process order" quite a bit but lately I have found that clicking the 'try again' button once or twice usually results in the order going through. My previous experience w/the 'try again' button was that it did absolutely nothing. BTW... I don't use quick-buy... not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Regarding the $5.00 Amazon credit code, I think the only people that got the version of the AmieStreet shutdown email that contained the Amazon code are those who actually had a credit balance in their account.
SRM,
I want to also publicly thank you for the numerous recommendations & highlights of free and cheap music @ AmieStreet.

The Shake 'Em Ups - Acoustic Folk, old-timey folk. Decent, although no T-Bone Burnett production. Currently free.
Mentone - Empire Reggae inflected jamband. Once you get past the dork emcee, it is not bad. Friend of the Devil reggae? Hmmmpf.

Skywhale is English prog-jazz from 1977 - sounds pretty good so far.
Resistor is a sort of electronic noise jazz - also sounds ok for free.
Also check out Jungle Bop by Trioizm - the title Jungle Bop describes it pretty well.
I also absolutely love Semblance by Steve Blanco and Jeremy Wilms - currently $2.38
And Wayward Monks is a decent fusion-y jazz.
And Finders Keepers by Steve Langone sounds good and has Jerry Bergonzi on saxophone. - currently $1.05
Skywhale: Look out below!
@amclark2 - Thanks for these recs. I've enjoyed and d/l'd 3 or 4 already. Why not? It's almost the end of free!
New drops ..... .including The Walkmen.
