Hey, thanks amclark and everyone. It was an odd thing to greet me when I sat down this morning and tried to put a dent in my sleepy head with some coffee. Pretty cool. I'll wait and see what kind of momentum builds from that emu thread, then shoot emu an email.
And there is no opting out of the Jazz Mandate. If you think Pitchfork was bad, wait 'til you see me apply the Jazz Health Plan to the citizens of this fine republic. Feel free to call it Jonahcare or JazzFork or whatever derogatory tag your vicious little minds can come up with. But you will take your jazz medicine.
About time someone had the courage to stand up for Government-sponsored jazz injections.
To paraphrase Trent Lott, "When Sun Ra ran for president, we voted for him. Were proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either."
Those of you who Mtrak in lieu of eMu on occasion, they have three top tier albums there right now: Veronica Falls, Feist's new one, and the new Beirut. I left merrily both eMu and Mtraks for a while, but it looks like a solid three-month span of 75 downloads where I'm getting amazing music. I can also promote Boubacar Troure from Mali's Kar Kar album, Kiln's Dusker, The Pain's Belong if you haven't gotten that one, Deer Tick albums, and various jazz albums, mostly Clean Feed and a few others. Only one of my nine albums came with Chinese tags too this month.
Good info, thanks Sort. Maybe we should have a "Found it at mTraks" thread...I've recently been thinking of buying a month or two to pick up some stuff on Pi and other labels that aren't on eMu.
clapping gleefully
The daily download was broken yesterday. It kept telling me I had to sign up again. I thought they finally made it so non-subscribers couldn't get the free tracks, since powerpiglet's "podcast" has been broken for over 2 weeks.
And so the wheel of life turns round....link. For reasons I haven't the conscious recollection of except a vague sense of deja vu I find myself smitten by irony.
I've just got an email about emusic's new look - see http://labs.emusic.com/2011/11/03/preview-emusics-new-look/. Why does any change in the emusic website always instill a fear into me that something will go wrong? Am I being irrational?
In a nutshell - Hell, no. (insert blasphemous phrase or swear words of choice), they couldn't get the last goddamn "upgrade" to function properly, so they're going to jump off a new cliff (taking us with them unfortunately)? One look at that preview page and I know this won't run at all on my obsolete rig at the workplace. Uggh!
P.S. What really pisses me off is that I am still finding new things, and completing old things, that I really, really like there, so why do they have to screw around with it? It's the music (and the prices), stupid, not the "cool graphics" or whatever other BS some corporate pencilneck trying to justify his sorryass paycheck dope thinks is going to make them competitive.
I've been using the itunes site longer than I've been a member of emusic, but I do not recollect any significant changes to their site in that time. This must be the third or fourth significant change that emusic has made in the three or four years I have been there - ie about one per year. Why didn't they put a bit more effort into getting it right to start with. I know why, I have this thing about people needing to make changes - there is a feeling around that change, any change, is good - I've even doen a final year undergraduate lecture on it in relation to UK education - politicians constantly make changes to our education system just to prove they are doing something. The university where I used to work in changed its faculty and school structure ever two years or so, just to keep us on our toes. Perhaps emusic thinks it will bring in more members and therefore more money. End of rant!!
The goal of this new design is to make it easier to find what youre looking for
To me, that would mean an Advanced Search function, not "prominent imagery", which is of course a way of making it easier to find what emusic wants me to look for.

You are not alone there. What should we call it? I think of it as the I Need To Justify My Salary Syndrome - because if I'm not changing something they might figure out they don't really need me. God forbid that these sheepdips ought to think that they might make their product/service more competitive by making it better, instead of changing it. It's just easier to put "change" on paper or screen, than it is to actually monitor what makes customers happy - you might have to actually talk to people, heaven forbid - which I think brings us back to the starting point here because it seems exactly what eMu is doing.

After a quick look at those screenshots: having about 50% of the viewable area taken up with a photo of a band I'm not interested in must logically make it harder to find what I'm looking for, because I am essentially going to have to scroll to get past the advertising.
I wanted to reach out to all of our Message Board members and give you a heads up that the look and navigation of eMusic will start changing in the coming days. On November 3rd, 2011 an email was sent to members announcing the changes so some of you may already be aware of this.
Some of the pages such as Your Account and Message Boards will stay the same but others such as Home, Editorial, Artist and Album pages have all been streamlined. Heres a peek at what the site will look like. http://labs.emusic.com/2011/11/03/preview-emusics-new-look/
The goal is to make new music discovery easier and visiting eMusic even more fun.
Ill also add to your posts on the boards to get some discussion going. We hope youll be as excited about these changes as we are and as always, your feedback is encouraged. You can also email me at moderator@emusic.com
Thanks!
Noah
So no much needed change to the message board then!!
Went to a new release page and found one of the more remarkable troll rant reviews I've seen in a while.......link. Sheesh.
EDIT - That review is gone, as doofy found (below) - it did contain a great deal of profanity, maybe every fifth or sixth word, so it must have been scrubbed.
EDIT 2 - Apparently you have to be logged in to see the review, just as there are other things there which you can't view unless you are a logged-in member.
And wait a minute, it's by jazzmine - I vaguely recall some reference to this being a member from days gone by formerly known as ....... (before my time but it seemed to have elicted a very strong negative response from some quarters).
The reviewer has a point, though. The Vague, Ill-Defined and Actually Rather Tangential Ann Peebles Collection is a lot better, but of course eMusic doesn't carry it, natch.

You can opt out.

Rob Mazurek runs our death panels, so you two might want to cut it with the jokes.
Speaking of Rob, it looks like we'll be featuring a song from "Double Demon" as an AAJ dotd in the near future. Very excited about this development.

But, yay! Today it works again!
