ECM has a different distributor outside the US, so we've offered their content in the EU for some time. In the US, it comes to us through UMG, which is why we haven't been able to offer it until now. Yes, there are two different catalogs, so that we can legally offer them in the regions and so that royalties can be paid out to the correct party.
I expected this answer, but it still seems like nothing a competent accountant couldn't sort.
Since it was asked in earnestness and with good intent, it seems rude to not at least answer it with "I am not able to answer your question at this time."
I'm pretty well convinced that the rips are not low quality - I haven't heard anything bad about actual sound quality
FWIW I put the Pepsi challenge to a few Rolling Stone tracks in Fraunhofer from their 4/08 visit to eMu vs. 7digital DL's - I posted the actual numbers on one of the MB threads, but my perception was that there was not loads of difference but there was difference, most perceptible in the timbre of the snare drum - definitely more tinny and sharp on the Fraunhofer, more full and pleasant on the 7dig LAME DL's. Some classical listeners have also complained about tinniness. If there's one thing I hate it's Tinny....tinny, tinny,tinny....it should be woody.
Try harpsichord (I think one track on Between the Buttons if memory serves me right -- been years -- but solo harpsichord is a good test of mp3 quality.
"Lady Jane" was one of the tracks as it happens, and I felt the LAME DL had some advantage but it wasn't as pronounced as the snare sound - that was the element I could hear the most appreciable difference on. That was on Blue Turns To Grey and Out Of Time. I was doing my best to be dispassionate about it. Here's the numbers, and it was the $1.48 encoding test thread.
From December's Children - Blue Turns To Grey-
Fraunhofer 2.6MB 145kbps(VBR)
LAME 3.96 5.8MB 320kbps
From Aftermath UK -
Lady Jane
Fraunhofer 4.8MB 212kbps(VBR)
LAME 3.96 7.3MB 320kbps
Out Of Time
Fraunhofer 8.9MB 220kbps(VBR)
LAME 3.96 13MB 320kbps
I'm envying the former annuals who cancelled and got offers. I pushed the button almost 3 weeks ago and nada. Not that I think I want to rejoin, but it's a big hit to the ego
Just for your entertainment here's some of the latest from The Sage of Ephesus, or was that F He Says-
Look, I think you misunderstand the motivations here. This has less to do with defending emusic than it does with incessant whining, kvetching, nitpicking, self-pity, rage, and other forms of drama about pretty trivial hardships.
Looks like maybe Hyperbole has a sense of history. My votes with cafreema.
In addition, he/she is on my side as far as I am concerned: http://www.emusic.com/messageboard/viewTopic.html?topicId=265730# Given that he/she/they can sleep with Wanderer as far as I care. Okay -- I take that back... Wanderer can sleep with Wanderer. There I feel better.
I can't check out Hyperbole's profile, though, as any time I click on a profile it asks my to login and if I login it asks me to reactivate my account. But if Hyperbole has been around since 2008 without any downloads, it seems possible that this may be someone who quit in 2008 and has come back for the UMG content?

It looks they are cracking down on reviews that complain about bit rate and maybe price. Trying to decide what to SFL and add to a Christmas list, I couldn't help but do some price comparisons between eMu and Amazon. Not surprisingly, it really varies.
I am going to spew - 1. How the F does Hyperbole have Neighbors if there haven't been any downloads, and more importantly, 2. How the F did I become one of them? I demand a recount. It's a travesty I tell you. Swindddddlllleeeee.
Of course, I might not if it weren't for the fact that I work in the HR Department at Getting On Peoples' Asses About Their General Incompetence, Inc., and that we're expanding.
I don't know if this is the intended deliberate effect, namely so disgusting and irritating your customers so that they just don't bother you any further, but the latest BS reply to an e-mail to CS regarding what I viewed as overpricing, namely $7.69 for The Blasters album Hard Line - 25 years old, 10 tracks, 36 minutes (what a bargain), has pushed me there. Apparently just because iTunes has it for $9.99 it's all good by their perception. If I wanted to be petty I would point out that $7.69 is not 25% less than $9.99 but why quibble. In fact why give a rat's ass. Thanks to those villians at Amazon and their heartless sales I've spent more on CDs this last month than in years - oh, wait, maybe that's a good thing because I've gotten some really good stuff. Way to go, eScrooge. Keep it up.
More doom and gloom - having had the opportunity to check out a number of the new additions from this week I'm afraid that it appears those who predicted "iTunes lite" were right on the money, in more ways than one. There were about 200+ albums added from Sanctuary Records Fontana(sp?) and it seems most of them are priced at 0.79/track with accordingly inflated album prices - these include current chart-busters such as Donovan's first album, Bert Jansch, Pentangle.... you get my drift. Many releases from Warner Bros. labels are also similarly inflated, although some were not. This looks to be the direction of the new eMusic. It appears I won't be downloading much beyond the fossilized material already in my SFL and what few Paleozoic contemporaries can find their way to join them at a reasonable price. Well, got to do some chores - hmmm, which new CD shall I put on?
Enjoyed that link, mommio. There was mention of 'IndieGate' - if I missed it before, that term certainly made me crack up today.
The comment quoted by EVDebs ( "flows from the rampant dishonesty that has marked emusics communication strategy regarding this price increase") isn't much different than what they did with the Sony drop - they touted the Sony label was joining eMusic, but neglected to mention ANY price increase in that announcement.
Thanks Mommio too. I think the article is right that Cathy is trying to take on too many roles and doing little to control what is already out of control. eMu lost a chance to use their own discussion board for if not good, at least for showing that they value their customers.
Again, thanks for the link Mommio. I've been away from my computer for two and a half days, so I always like to catch up on the message boards. It is interesting that I now go to emusers first. Although I still read through the emusic message board, I've stopped making any contributions in the last ten days or so, as it all seems the same. The way things are going I do wonder how long emusic will keep their message board going.....

I do hope nothing got lost in the translation.

Mailman (and a couple others over there) sorta needs to get a job.
