@Karg - Unfortunately, I'm just as bad with names in real life, too. And once I mis-name someone, that's the name they're stuck with in my head for life. Typically, my wife has to remember all of her friends, family, and co-workers by two names... their real ones and the names that I've given them.
@Nanker - Thanks for that. The second episode of season 3 actually talked a lot about some of your post, especially in relation to the dead king's family (Robert?).. ie Stanislaw and the gay king with the crown of antlers. The part about the succession was very helpful... it was hard for us to figure out the timeline of things.
@Nereff - As it should be. Ostrich's are kind creatures who have never hurt nobody.
@eMusers - So, we watched the first two episodes of season 3...
***Totally spoilers ahead***
... I love that they're spending time in the northern territory. I'm a sucker for snowy scenes like that, though I'd really like to see more of the actual layout of the Wall... the various rooms, the way it functions... but I'm guessing there'll be plenty of time for that later when armies begin defending the wall from white walkers, which has gotta be how season 3 ends and season 4 begins.
... I feel bad for Tyriol the dwarf. I want to see him get back in the game. I feel bad for myself because he hasn't really been given many good scenes in season 3. I'm hoping that changes.
... Gotta admire the new queen-to-be (the one who was married to the antler-crown Borathian prince). I don't know exactly what will come of the Stark-redhead girl's conversation with the queen-to-be and her mother at that luncheon, but the looks on their two faces when the redhead (Samsa? Yes! I think it's Samsa! I think I'm getting a name right!) said that the king was a monster, it's hard to explain, it was like the two of them just saw a normal challenge and planned to neutralize it, as if they had been told that the castle gutters often get clogged or the throne had sprung a leak... mad king? Okay, let's plan for it... I thought that scene showed a lot of the intelligence of the show (well, assuming it went down as I think it did).
... Not excited that they seem to be introducing a Robin Hood type outfit in the Arya storyline. Not that it won't work, just that it seems (potentially) sort've copped from, y'know, the actual Robin Hood story. I also think I'm going to quickly tire of that Dog character if he sticks around too much in the spotlight.
... I do appreciate how the blonde dragon-lady's barbarian tribe are just perpetually vomiting from their first time on a ship. I don't know, it just seemed like a detail that was important to add. I always forget that vomiting only has one 't' in it. Still not sure how to spell eunich, which should not be taken for a complaint.
... That chick John Snow was supposed to kill? I regret that he didn't. She is totally annoying. Something about her voice and her facial gestures... it's like she wandered too far from Downton Abbey and got recruited by the Wildlings.
... I think this whole storyline with the little legless kid from Snowfell is going to irritate me soon, with so much time spent on his dreams and now it appears he'll get to have animal familiars or something (Mogs? Wogs? something like that). I just see this, potentially, as being a very stupidly stupid dumb storyline to adopt. It's gonna be the kind of thing that makes me sick of seeing any of the Stark children show up on the screen. It'll make the entire land seem much smaller if they keep focusing on just one family. Also, it just seems ordinary. It's the kind of thing done many times before. It's unoriginal, and really doesn't have anything to do with the series' biggest strength... the strategies and dramas of court, castle, and kingdom control.
... Pretty cool seeing the dragons flying around. Too bad they come as a package deal with the blond.
... Don't think I mentioned that I like Tyrol the dwarf's bodyguard. The dialog between those two is pretty fun to watch. Where did that dude come from anyway? Was he one of the dudes at the tavern when Ned Stark's widow took Tryiol into custody (before, then, taking him to the weird breastfeeding sister's castle)? I feel like that's when he came around, that he was originally recruited by the widow, but then after defending Tyriol in that duel against the sister's warrior, the two of them became a pair.
I think that's it. Tonight will be episode 3 and maybe episode 4 of season 3.
GoT is taking next week off because of some boring yankee holiday (the Liberace biopic from Soderberg w Michael Douglas and Matt Damon is on HBO instead) so by the time its back you will be all caught up, clever boy. ;-)
Something has changed (for the better) in this country when a onetime action hero is playing Lee Liberace, and a current action hero playing his companion!
Oh come on! What do you mean they're taking a week off? I was already anxious how I was going to handle only getting to watch one episode a week for the final two episodes, but now I've got an extra week to wait?
It's a good thing I've got season 3 of Boardwalk Empire and all of Treme to transition me away from GoT, 'cause otherwise, I don't know how else I'd be able to face the bleak abyss that is the wait until season 4 is televised.
@ kargatron, OMG, your post totally cracks me up, it's like the convos I have at work with these 2 gals who follow GoT. One of them always gets the names wrong but I know EXACTLY who she's talking about from her description. And we go off on tangents like your Ned Stark Plumbing advert. Anyhoo. One of them mentioned there is a family tree thing on wiki. Not that I've looked it up, but she hasn't read the book & she was saying it was very helpful. Right before she caved in to hear my book spoilers.
That dwarf Tylenol is my fave character. winky
Agree, the Wall scenes are spectacular.
@jonahpwll - boo hiss, your news about no new ep this weekend was dire, indeed.
@ Nereffid - join ussssss. Unless it costs rent money - in which case, the re-runs & a re-read of this thread in 2 years will be almost as jolly.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! No More Episodes. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Until Sunday. And I cannot stress this enough: Be in front of the TV on Sunday when it airs live. Do not wait to watch it later. It's on HBO, so no commercials and no excuses.
(This is assuming of course that GoT continues to have the penultimate episode be the one were the big thing happens, like they did in season 1 and 2.)
***Game of Thrones SPOILERS to follow, big time***
-King Jopry reminds me of Justin Bieber. Trade in his crown for a liter of sculpting gel, and he's there.
-Why why why do they insist of doing dumb stupid storylines with the blonde dragon chick? Gawwwwwwd. #Tedious.
-Okay, so fatty kills one of those very cool kickass snow creatures, but then leaves the magic knife behind? Oh come on!
-So, speaking of that creature, was that a White Walker? Or was that some other kind of northern monster? I thought the white walkers were the Snow Zombies, but maybe the white walkers are the monsters and so are their victims... the people who become Snow Zombies.
-I guess I'm supposed to feel bad for Jamey because he's been humbled and lost his hand? Whatever. I remember it wasn't that long ago he pushed a little boy out of a window to kill him.
-And it's too bad he didn't kill that little boy, because the kid-Woggle storyline is boring me to tears. Great, so he has a Woggle buddy and they see things through the eyes of animals together and have fits in their sleep. WhatEVER! Boring! #Boring.
-I'm sad that the dwarf Tyriol keeps getting crapped on. I'm really enjoying the relationship between him and his whore-buddy. She has the best facial gestures in the show, especially the sweet one after Tyriol's wedding night and she saw the clean bedsheets.
-I don't like how the bald eunich councilor and the whore house councilor who used to be the mayor of Baltimore on The Wire have become less ambiguous, and more transparently "good" or "evil." It makes them less interesting.
-Those Lancasters are one fucked up family. I felt that way before, but now that the father is back, they look even more dysfunctional. Their name, actually, may be Langshires. Langors. No, I think it's Langshires.
-Great, so Dog is still alive. Whatever.
-Okay, look, there's no way that bastard son of the king kid is going to sleep with that priestess. I was a seriously ahem "motivated" teenager once, and no matter how ahem "motivated" I got, it was never so bad that I'd drop my pants for a creepy lady twice my age. That's just not happening. Older woman, fine, gotchya. Creepy but same age, sure, no problem, I would've been game. But old and creepy, oh hell no. That scene couldn't have been more unrealistic if they decided that dragons existed in this world.
-Okay, so where were the dragons in the previous episode, when blonde chick (Dani? Dani Targarian?) had those desert mercenaries all up in her face? The dragons are the only cool thing about that storyline, but we don't even get that. Just more I'm-very-determined staring out into space from Dani. Guh.
-I told you those Robin Hood knockoffs were totally bogus. It looks like Aria has finally shook them. Good.
-I like the queen-to-be's mother. She's a great character, and acted well.
-I feel like the show has been bleeding intelligence the last couple episodes. They're still good, and I have no idea how I'm going to avoid freaking out when the final two episodes of season 3 are televised and I have to wait over a year before the next season gets shown, but still, damn, let's finish strong, people! Get your shit together and throne it up!
I think that's it. I might have more. I probably do. My television rage is inexhaustible.
I'm still totally lost on GoT names. I read the synopsis of the new GoT episode before watching it, and I had no idea who Robb was, or who Edmure, Waldo Fry, Jon, Dario, Jora, Yunko, Frey or Tully was.
Once the episode began, I remember Jon is the bastard Stark at the wall, and I did successfully guess that Rob is the Stark new northern king, but, damn, the rest of them.
Okay, so ***Seriously Spoilers Ahead***
-Okay, fine, big ending. It caught me off guard, kind of, though the way the castle lord was acting, it almost seemed like he was having fun taking jabs at Rob and his mother before doing more than jabbing. I just knew that Rob's new wife was gonna die there, but didn't expect it to go down like it did.
-While I didn't much care for Rob or his mother, with yet more Starks dying, it means the show is going to increasingly focus on the stupid legless kid and his Fob powers. BORING!
-I don't like that the dire wolves keep getting killed. I think they're even more cool than the dragons.
-So, they waste precious time on that blonde dragon lady's deal. A few people standing around a table, a couple sword fights, a pathetically obvious build-up of conflict between the new barbarian and the blonde's longtime advisor. And NO dragons. BORING!
-No Tryrol the dwarf. BORING!
-In fact, other than the stupid boy king coward who reminds me of Justin Bieber, I really hate it when they don't spend time on the Lancaster family and Castle Landing. The court intrigue is the best part, and definitely the strength of both story and writers. Nobody knows how to write an actual war story, which is just as well, because the show shouldn't be focusing on it so much.
-The fat kid and the chick with the newborn... if they're headed to Black castle, then I'm all in. That part might be very cool, even though it pains me to watch both actors. But the fat kid is kinda charming sometimes. I certainly applaud the power of reading, as emphasized in the story. Good for them.
-I don't mind the bastard kid or his story, but I'm disappointed they didn't spend more time in the north. Now it's just kinda dull. He left that Downton Abbey chick behind, which sorta surprised me.
-I think it's pretty lame that the show isn't spending more time at The Wall, but I still think that might change in the finale and all of next season. I'm sticking with my guess that next season focuses on a war with the White Walkers... both the war at the The Wall and the war at Castle Landing, where the Bieber King and the weird Lancasters keep writing off the danger of the Walkers. Could be good stuff.
-Hey, one part of that blonde dragon chick storyline that was cool was the way her former slave captain leader was fighting in that scene. It was neat seeing how gracefully he used a spear in tight fighting area like that. I dunno. I just thought that part of the scene was cool. The rest of it, especially those two other dudes, was lame.
-Aria is still the best thing going outside of the Lancasters. I wasn't as irritated by Dog as I have been previously. Obviously the two of them will be together for some time to come, unless the season-ending episode creates a scenario where Dog gives up his life saving Aria, which I could see happening.
-I'm sick of the GoT theme song. I do really like how the castles and maps are presented during the theme, however. Pretty cool.
-One more episode. Not sure how I'm gonna make it until the next season begins. Guh.
NannaParker, I'm with you. I have a hard time swallowing such relentless naming confusion. JohnWhipoorwill, if it comes naturally, still, it's a rare, rare "talent". I have to agree with Cafemama that your rejection of the theme brings your musical taste into question - perhaps suggesting your eMuMu column is extravagant artifice.
And who's JohnWhipoorwill? That name sounds familiar. Is that the annoying kid with the Fob powers who's been hanging out with the legless Stark?
Actually, what is that kid's name? Any of them, really. The only one I can remember is Hodu.
Y'know, maybe if the legless Stark kid and his lame-ass friends simply restricted all conversation to saying their name in various tones and emphases to denote emotion, then maybe I'd finally remember their names. It would have the added benefit of improving the acting and storyline. God I'm so sick of those stupid Fobs with their stupid Fob powers. I'm hoping that the season ends with Hodu launching each of them from off the wall, and then going to wander the northlands on a big adventure. That's what I'm hoping for next season.
I'm three episodes in. It's pretty slow thus far. I find a few of the characters intolerable, even to the point where I got up and walked away to get something out of the kitchen so I wouldn't have to watch the rest of one particular actor's scene.
Oh, speaking of disappointing acting... I'm very bummed to discover that John Goodman has a big role on Treme. I don't dislike him or anything as a general rule, but he's only good for sitcoms, funny stuff. Put him in a drama, however, and he just looks comical (cc: West Wing). The guy can't act. I watch him and it's not like I'm watching a character on Treme; it's like I'm watching John Goodman play a character on Treme. The guy lacks nuance. He lacks subtlety. His standard operating mode is set on overact.
Obviously I like the fact that there's a focus on Jazz.
I didn't know Kermit Ruffins was on the show. In fact, I didn't know that so many jazz artists were on the show. I remember reading something once, just a glance, that Christian Scott has something to do with the show, but I purposefully didn't read it or anything about the show, fearing that I'd run into spoilers.
I'll probably watch episode four of season one tomorrow. Kinda hoping it either picks up the pace a bit or that I settle into the pace the show has established. Either could happen and I'd be cool with either outcome.
We enjoyed Hatfields & McCoys; it's on Netflix. Maybe a little overdramatized? And I haven't really looked into the historical accuracy. And the producers definitely had a favorite side. But I liked it still.
I keep slogging through Battlestar Galictica. Parts of it I think got a little spoiled here, but whatever. Sometimes the daily life episodes get a little slow. But the season changeovers keep me coming back. The "New Caprica" series was great.
Anybody else watching the new Arrested Developments? I'm conflicted about it. It's funny, but sometimes the complexity and tangled-ness of it feels maybe a bit more forced than it used to. But I don't know. It's like I don't just like it; it's either really good, and I'm fighting a prejudice against it because it's a comeback show, or it's not good, and I'm fighting to try to like it. Or some mixture of the two. I should probably just start all over at the beginning and see how it goes with the rest. But I don't know that I actually will.

NBC is run by a bunch of monkeys with typewriters, right?
Harmon coming back to Community.

If only I could admit that my daft rants were part of a mastermind deception. Unfortunately, it just comes naturally.
I didn't even know they were books until like page two of the GoT discussion.
Cellist Julia Kent, popular here on eMusers and elsewhere, had this to say about GoT on twitter...
And who's JohnWhipoorwill? That name sounds familiar. Is that the annoying kid with the Fob powers who's been hanging out with the legless Stark?

His sister is Meera Reed.
Hodor is Hodor.

(Should I give in and beg for reassurance that my joke wasn't missed? How low you've brought me, jonah... I am defeated.)
Ohhhh, now I get it. I'm JohnWhipperpool. I think. Wait, maybe not. Am I right?

But I don't know. It's like I don't just like it; it's either really good, and I'm fighting a prejudice against it because it's a comeback show, or it's not good, and I'm fighting to try to like it. Or some mixture of the two. I should probably just start all over at the beginning and see how it goes with the rest. But I don't know that I actually will.
