New name - new year! I like how we managed to get close to that nice round number of 1000 posts last year, but I didn't post as often as usual - maybe this year.
OK, so since the title has been chosen, I'll just mention what I came up with a few weeks back - and part of it will actually be used as an occasional occurring segment on Random Radio.
So, I thought of taking a very stiff-upper-lip version of the thread title: "What Have You Been Listening To Heretofore?"
as in:
"what have you been listening to up to this time?"
and changing it to
"What Have You Been Listening To Here 2-4?"
which reminded me of the boringly-named segment on my show of "New Sounds/New Releases"
and how I'm going to change it to "Hear: 2-4"
as in "... on tonight's segment, "Hear: 2-4," we'll be diving into some new things that've been released or will soon be released this year..."
In 2025, it'll be different and I actually came up with that version before the '24 one, so I'll be ready for then as well.
Starting off the new year with a couple of box sets that I've had sitting around here. Even tho incomplete, it's nice to have better quality versions of all of these LPs that I've had for over 50 years. I'll mention the other box set when I'm done with this one. Twenty-one discs of first-rate contemporary classical goodness:
"Oceanic" an Experimental/Post Metal album by Isis and it is far more melodic than this description would suggest. Rated no. 8 for 2002 by ProgArchives
AMG says "Oceanic is a masterfully complex symphony of majestic noise and melody, an all-consuming trip into the earth and mind that defies genre and, often, description -- simply put, a triumph."
Well I need to relax after Isis, so what could be better than one of my favourite Post Rock albums - "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
AMG says"It is a windfall for any fan of ambient pop, orchestral rock, space rock, or simply lush string arrangements who understands how powerful love, melancholy, and frustration can be.....it's loaded with dynamics, unexpected sections, strong emotions and beauty.".
Rate Your Music rates it no. 2 for the year 2000 whilst ProgArchives rates it no. 4. Oh my, a 2 and a 4 = 24!
For some unknown reason, having long departed as a member, I checked back today on eMusic.
Much to my surprise, all my purchases are still sitting there and fully accessible under "My Music" although, I hasten to add, I long ago uploaded them to the Cloud for safe keeping!
I was intrigued to see my first dozen purchases from eMusic 16 years ago in late 2007:
Santana "The San Mateo Sessions" Paul Horn "Inside The Taj Mahal" Ides Of March "Vehicle" John Coltrane "A Love Supreme" Ravi Shankar "Ragas" Various Artists "The Art Of Chill" Os Mutantes "Everything Is Possible" Luiz Bonfa "Jacaranda" Various Artists (Luaka Bop) "Beleza Tropical Brazil Classics 1" Thunderclap Newman "Something In The Air" Thelonious Monk "Brilliant Corners" Pink Floyd "London 1966/67"
My usual eclectic mix!
A sad reminder of how good eMusic was back in the day, how big a selection of top notch music there used to be on the site and now it's all gone.
Thanks for the hint, just checked my account and indeed backed up all my music in the past, but very interesting to see what I bought. Yes it was a great site, shame how it fell apart
Other recent purchases that have been on the virtual turntable the last couple of days.
2nd album is
Oren Ambarchi, Mark Fell, Will Guthrie, Sam Shalabi – Oglon Day
3rd album is
OUA – Elements – Germination
which is to say Martin Archer's Orchestra of the Upper Atmosphere or at least half of them recording a live improv which eventually mutated into their Theta 6 album a bit like the way Teo Macero used scissors on Miles' jamming to produce In A Silent Way etc.
