Most of these I say, "Yeah, well, that's life," but this one really hits me hard. One of my top 5 favorite artists, probably, he passed away months ago and I didn't even know.
The great Scottish singer and song writer Jackie Leven passed away on Monday, 14th November, at 8 o'clock in the evening. He had suffered from cancer.
Inevitably Davy Jones was the Monkee that we, in the UK, identified with most. I still remember watching the show regularly on Saturday tea-time TV, when it was one of the very few music programmes on British TV. Time to search out some Monkees music....
They didn't show the Monkees on PBS back in the day, did they? I'm probably thinking of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Was Monkees shown on Fox, Channel 32 on the UHF dial?
Clark's passing could hardly be called a surprise, but if you're my age and like me remember when American Bandstand was so influential it's kind of sad anyway.
Yes I agree choiceweb0pen0 - yet another Bert Weedon. I suspect he is probably not that well known to many. Originally a jazz guitarist in the early 1950s he moved into rock and roll in the second half of the fifties. But during that time he wrote two guitar playing manuals that influenced a whole generation of Britsh guitarists. You've probably heard of some of them - Paul McCartney and George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Brian May amongst many others. In the mid 1980s he came on as a surprise guest at an Eric Clapton concert I was at. EC introduced him as the man that had had most influence upon him in his early stages as a guitarist. Even then, getting close to seventy, he could still wow the audience with his playing, backed by EC with Mark Knoffler on second guitar.
I remember being a freshman in college, and a friend saying the Beastie Boys were getting old - some of them were almost 30, he said, which is too damn old to be a Beastie Boy. Well 47 is too damn young to stop being a Beastie Boy. RIP.

I'm off to play The Pixies' "Monkee Gone To Heaven" at high volume in his honor.
I forgot that I used to watch the Monkees as a regular thing as a kid. It really was a special thing that I still have fond memories of.
@Chicago peeps

I remember well a large number of tracks that the Memphis Horns played on, perhaps Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay being my favourite.

Never realized that was him playing Jack Ridley in The Right Stuff - the guy who keeps lending Yeager gum. Love that movie.
Not a band I particularly listened to a lot, but I did like Thomas Marth's sax playing, and it is always sad to see someone die prematurely
