Werken - Sum
I like this. Low-key dubby/experimental electronic instrumentals. Free download from Zymogen.
Sum is the debut album of Werken, one of the aliases of Tilman Ehrhorn known for his releases on Mille Plateaux and Resopal Schallware.
Working full time as saxophone and reed player, composer, producer and sound designer Tilman Ehrhorn is a highly regarded jazz artist who also took roots in the electronic world...This release introduces an experimental and ambientish dubby side of his producing skills. Almost every sound has been generated on a modular synthesizer. Some important developing tools within the synth are sine- and noiseoscillators, with which also most of the percussion sounds are built.... In many parts of the tracks, beats are used rhythmically free to interrupt a pulsing soundpad, which is a main element of the music. Some minimal changing figures are taking hold to break up continous sequential patterns...The non-conventional manner of generating sounds as well as using elements of chance within the production process creates similarities with the improvisational niveau of jazz and contemporary composed music.
Two very good instrumental rock/post-rock EPs, one of them still for sale on emusic and amazon, but both made available for free download on the (apparently dormant) band's website.
While the EP is available for purchase from the band or label, the songs will always be available for free in high-quality mp3 files. Fans are encouraged to share the music freely - access to the work will never be mediated financially.
While taking a nod from the sonic scapes of The Appleseed Cast and Explosions In The Sky, Motionless adds a new element to the sound in Jay Penman's growling fender rhodes - almost transparent at times, but most crucial to the overall sound. As each hypnotic cinder smokers away and unfolds, the band uses their time productively - to experiment with an array of effects, dynamics, and moods. Don't be mistaken: even with a seemingly stripped down instrumentation, the members of Motionless are able to weave complex and chaptered narratives without speaking a word - just as effectively (and perhaps moreso) than traditional lyrical rock bands. This is the mark of a truly successful instrumental group.
The Windmill EP is actually album length. Both are good.
The Room40 imprint is celebrating their 10th anniversary with a massive compilation:

A single track rec:
If there is any place in your heart for swelling drones (e.g. later Stars of the Lid), head over here and download the sample track "4th Theme". I don't have the whole album (yet), but this track is quite lovely.
Two good free albums by Zen Savauge - aka Jason Corder, aka Off the Sky/offthesky. A little darker than his Off the Sky material. Good stuff, and actually quite tuneful in places.
Through the adept manipulation of countless audio design tools coupled with various acoustic instruments played by the artist himself, Jason Corder (Zen Savauge aka Off The Sky) creates a vivid spectrum of emotional variation. He maintaining a delicate balance of noise on melody, creating a tense yet somber journey through a seemingly post-apocalyptic cityscape of techno decay submerged under a watery blanket of pixilated distortion.
Does that make the additions of the majors the inflationary period after the relatively slow expansion following the big bang that was the end of all you can eat?
If you like IDM and chillout electronica, this album that is for sale at emusic for $5.99 is free on LastFM, and is pretty decent. Not world-changing but a nice example of the genre...and free.
