If you find this video interesting (as I did) and like the music by Mark Templeton for which it was made (as I did), then you might like to download the track, "Scotch Heart", for free here (as I did).
ETA, there's a live set here too that gradually drew me in.
One thing about working with Dennis Coffey: the man likes to keep things Detroit-centric as much as possible. Which is great. The sheer amount of talent coming out of the D is incredible, and his latest album was heavily enriched by contributions from some of the city's finest performers. We wanted to give a nod to the wealth of Motor City talent in the electronic realm as well, which was one of the primary inspirations behind putting together this remix compilation.
We've partnered up with Fat Beats to give you an eight track collection featuring some of Detroit's top production talent, including contributions from Dabrye, Shigeto, 14KT, Recloose, Nick Speed & more.
A tribute to Nevermind that includes everyone from Jessica Lea Mayfield (who actually admits to discovering Nirvana through the Foo Fighters!) to The Vaselines. Plus the amazing Amanda Palmer doing "Polly".
A couple of new Audio Gourmet goodies. I have warmed more and more to their concept of 15 minute albums - just right for my walk to work - and their average quality has been very high.
This one's in the dark ambient vein, and very nice.
Wbaum is the solo project of musician and producer Claus Poulsen who works with laptop, turntables, guitars, field recordings and other sound sources. ... After immersing yourself in these six short but atmospheric movements, it might strike you that Claus's sound is remarkably refined for someone who has only had one other solo release under his belt.
This one's brighter and more ethereal and delicate.
Widesky is New Mexico, US based experimental artist Seth Chrisman. His only release before this was an acclaimed EP on Rural Colours earlier this year called 'Floating In Being'. His work is typically created through extended techniques using field recordings, radio static, found sound and instrument sources. These are then processed with software to create his eventual compositions. The two pieces that form 'Celestial Bodies' were recorded in 2010. They are both improvisations with guitar and laptop, recorded in one take without overdubs.
Both are worth a listen.
Audio Gourmet has added a couple of new pay-for albums as well.
Not many groups really merit being described as rebel rockers, but Tinariwen are one. Based in the Sahara in northern Mali, this band of Tuareg musicians first came together in a series of refugee camps, and members of the group once actively engaged in rebellion against their government. Drawing as heavily on the likes of Jimi Hendrix as on the protest music of north Africa, the band have since become one of the most successful "world music" acts on the planet.
Touring relentlessly, they have released four albums, the last of which, Imidiwan, won the 2009 Uncut Music Award for being "the most inspiring and richly rewarding album of the last 12 months".
The group's new album, Tassili, was recorded in southern Algeria and is released by V2 on 29 August. To mark this, the band have specially recorded an eight-track album, Live at Bouffes du Nord, which is available as an exclusive download below.
The download features the tracks:
1 ASUF D ALWA; 2 DJERGH ISHILAN; 3 IMIDIWAN MA TENAM; 4 TAMIDITIN TAN UFRAWAN; 5 KUD EDAZAMIN; 6 ISWEIGH ATTAY; 7 TAKEST TAMIDARET; 8 TAMEYAWT.
...soothing. ambient-drone settings easily capable of transporting the receptive listener to faraway realms, even if the trip is purely imaginary. Beardow demonstrates a level of control and patience in the music's execution that reflects the seasoned mark of someone with more than eight years of audio and music production study and a particular focus on synthesizers and effects programming. Signs at Midpoint Dawn Return exudes that meditative, hymnal quality so beloved by Stars of the Lid devotees, while Forgiven Drifts exhibits a similarly placid quality in its becalmed, organ-like unfurl....(from textura review)
I am not sure I have seen Very Short List mentioned here. They have occasional free downloads among the various things they collect in their daily emails. I find the mp3 samples unusual (not the same stuff I see on Amazon or eMu). Today's is Charles 'Packy' Axton - Hung Over the Martinis.
From the site, "Charles Packy Axton was a saxophone player on the soul scene that developed in and around Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1950s and 60s. His mom, Estelle, was a co-founder of Stax Records (the label took part of its name from part of hers). His high-school band included Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn (who went on to join Booker T. in the MGs), and Wayne Jackson (who later formed the Memphis Horns). And if Axton, who died at the age of 32, didnt have the hits his contemporaries had, he did leave a few amazing records behind."
I really enjoyed Doyeq's Eyelashes of Lanterns, recced elsewhere on here. There's another free Doyeq EP out, this one returning to the artist's other genre, ambient dub techno (this one is at the most laid back end of that genre). It's not bad. Not nearly as attention-grabbing as the Eyelashes release, but quite nice.
I know very little about the band, but stumbled upon this free album by the band Sloan: http://noisetrade.com/sloan.
From Wikipedia:
Sloan is a Toronto-based alternative rock quartet from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Throughout their 20-year tenure Sloan has released 10 LPs (one being a double), two EPs, a live album, a "best of" collection and no less than thirty singles. The band is known for their sharing of songwriting from each member of the group and their unaltered line-up throughout their career.
For anyone else who likes that Minizza album that Brighternow rec'd the other day, their label side has a link to download a free 96kbps version of their previous album, Music for Girls (with encouragement to buy it if you like it):
This one sounds a little more abrasive in places, but it's interesting so far. For the experimentally minded but with a strong pop element also.
(Incidentally this is another album that 7digital's own search engine can't find but Google reveals they have. Their search engine is the worst I've encountered. Cheaper at emu anyway though, where I see BN has a review).
The ukrainian pioneer of electronic music, Andrey Kirichenko, returns on Autoplate, this time he showcases with one of the most promising ukrainian talents, The Moglass. The untitled album Andrey and The Moglass provide via Autoplate presents tweaked, scenic accoustic material with a grainy, yet warm atmosphere.
Acoustic guitar loops with grainy electronics. Pleasant. Free at the archive.
ETA. Actually after more listening I'm not that sold on this.
Radere - Lost at Sea, Im Never Coming Back. Another release from the guy who gave us Maple Drip, liked by several on here a while back. This one's mostly hazy drone. Nice.
Inspired by a pair of field recordings captured during a trip to the shore, Lost At Sea... opens quietly, with softly billowing drones and wind-like currents moving through the mix. The piece gradually builds to a roaring crescendo before melting away to reveal a beautiful lattice of sparkling guitar loops and hauntingly delicate atmospherics. With Lost At Sea..., Ritger has managed to capture the illusion of being submerged beneath the sea: adrift, but at peace.
Free compilation of tracks from various artists including (among many others) Rafael Anton Irisarri, Specta Ciera, Damian Valles, Kyle Bobby Dunn, Gimu, Radere, Good Weather for an Airstrike, Leonardo Rosado, Gurun Gurun, Benjamin Dauer, ..... - 42 tracks. Lots of very nice stuff. Nice way to explore some of these artists if you haven't been following the many recommendations of their releases on this board (several of them have their own threads here) - and a nice free feast if you have.
The above link is to bandcamp, but there's also an album page here with more info, including a rather nice collection of bonus artwork. This really seems to be a lovingly curated project. Free download. (Warning: it's a 522 MB zip file)
A mixture of ambient textures, tinkly notes, and some slight glitschy rhythms, the overall effect is really quite pretty and very gentle and I'm finding it a good background for working. Free to download.
From the label site:
«Ceptual a.k.a. A Sankip Hummad a.k.a. Desmond Hollins is returning to test tube to present his new and amazing work made in the realms of experimental ambient. 'Songs for the sun' is an ambitious experiment in which Desmond mixes all his musical knowledge ranging from hip-hop to IDM to ambient music.
The outcome is a outstandingly rich collection of tunes that will make you dream and smile. Think Boards of Canada, think Folktronica, think early Brian Eno. Now think of something completely different. Yeah. Think about strolling about in your favorite woods or forest, looking above at the tree canopy... see the sun beams cracking through the leaves? Now imagine the perfect soundtrack for that (other than the nature itself, of course) and well, this is it.
On the sampler tip, here's one from the Brooklyn label and/or collective Primary Records. This includes the many and varied projects of Steven Lugerner, including a new outfit called In One Wind.
A free Noisetrade sampler, featuring the likes of M. Ward, Justin Townes Earle, Dawes, and he Low Anthem among others.
From the Noisetrade site: "Music Citys most progressive annual musical event, Next BIG Nashvilles SoundLand Festival, will take over Nashville September 21st 24th. SoundLand's stellar line up this year includes Foster the People, Ghostland Observatory, M. Ward, Justin Townes Earle, Dawes, Cults, The Low Anthem, JEFF The Brotherhood, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Bonobo, Ben Sollee, Carl Broemel, Yelawolf, Big K.R.I.T., Those Darlins, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Madi Diaz, Tristen and nearly 100 other artists. Note that all tips will go to benefit MusicCares http://www.grammy.org/musicares "
I have been greatly enjoying Jodi Cave's 12k release, For Myria, and so was happy to find this free release on term records, which, while a little less restrained, is in similar vein. Free download.
This is well worth a listen. A couple of really excellent tracks.
the rolling & glitchy beat becomes the framework for her carefully put-together constructs. She reveals parts of tracks in layers or blocks, like musical architechture and sometimes lets them breathe and grow by themselves as you witness their rigidity slowly turn into an organic, pulsating organism.
Fair warning on the NoiseTrade site, the albums are free - and there are cool finds - but most of it comes in at 192 CBR, which is crap on quality cans.
Even though Amazon seems to have stopped a free daily dload, they now offer a a ten-song bundle of "up and coming" artists, including Little Dragon, Luke Temple, Eleanor Friedberger, Jessica 6, Active Child, Nikki Jean, Katy B, Nick 13, Gardens & Villa, and Blind Pilot. From the page "Each month, we'll shine the spotlight on new artists we think you'll love and give you a free track from each. If you like what you hear, you can pick up each artist's latest release next month for a great price."
I have a natural suspicion of artists with numbers and letters instead of names, so this is not the artists that I think should be on the rise, but someone might like it. Eleanor Friedberger is good.

Also free tracks out there on the websites of Nick Lowe and Rudresh Mahanthappa, too lazy to do links. Rudresh has a new album coming out shortly.
