Very smooth and restful 20-minute guitar drone, nicely done, free at the archive. It was a Rural Colours release.
The Rural Colours section at the archive is well worth exploring. They are a good ambient/experimental label releasing 3" CDs, and after release they give the artist the choice of offering a paid or free download. The free ones are here.
It looks as if the internet archive is about to get a major facelift, bringing the interface up to date along the lines of bandcamp. Looks nice! Here's an example.
The Big-O is always a good place for free live concerts.Recently they have posted a number of Grateful Dead shows, including April 26, 1983, Philadelphia. This master comes from Charlie Miller, "renown in trading circles for his amazing ongoing upgrades and remasters of Grateful Dead soundboard and audience tapes that had formerly resided in the depths of only the most hardcore Dead collections." To make it even better, this is a "very good soundboard and audience matrix."
- "One hour of sono-thaumaturgical experiments divided in 4 Chapters, seamlessly executed by Salford based paramusician Christopher Gladwin, also known for being half of the legendary electronic duo Team Doyobi: over 15 years of incredible tunes on labels like Skam, ∆Icasea, Tigerbeat6 and Fat Cat.
Once you have downloaded this album you can't go back: The Wyrding Modulewill trap you into his world where everything you know is now questioned. Modern and Classic, Eastern and Western, Spiritual and Heretic will be no opposites."
Those still on eMusic will want to get this freebie - 22 tracks/90 min from the great Analog Africa label. Link goes to US store, hope those in other countries can get it too.
Didn't want to start a separate thread for this and not really sure which existing thread this would belong to.
But---
If you have amazon prime, they are running a special right now on this new PrimeNow service. You have to load the PrimeNow app on your phone and order $50 worth of PrimeNow stuff. They will give you $20 off your order. There is some sort of tip that is then charged on top so for my wife and I it worked out to about $12 off instead of $20.
So basically I got a copy of Kind of Blue on vinyl for a four or five dollars (free enough, IMO) and my wife got a bunch of make up stuff. The promotion code for the discount is TRYITNOW.
Free at the Live Jazz Lounge - cross-posting here from the now listening thread because it is rather good. If you've never checked out Ronin's Swiss-watchmaker-jazz this would be a good and free way in. If you know them already this is a good show.
I don't know how many have browsed through Jamendo (the French creative commons music site), but that stuff has a ton of great stuff (and a ton of bad stuff too obviously).
A few years ago after listening to about 2500 free albums, I did a feature story about my 13 favorite albums. (at the time, the site had 29,000 albums; now it has about twice that number).
All the albums I listed in my article (and addendum) are great, and even though several years have gone by, I think all the albums are still there (or at least an easy google away). All are indie; some (like Kristen Hersh) have always been well-known.
Among my fave discoveries was Monk Turner, an Los Angeles songwriter and producer who has been producing a ton of albums. (his bandcamp page of free albums is here). Everything he does is remarkable, but my fave album is his Emergency Album (which is sung by his oft collaborator Fascinoma).

Found a great concert by Dave Douglas featuring Aoife O'Donovan, they recorded a great album called Be Still and the concert is from around there, so much to explore on the site
