Sufjan Stevens, Too Much, new 6 minute track from his upcoming album, for free on BandCamp. The opening sounds like a Brian Eno wet-dream, and then it gets even better. Lush Sufjan vocals over a squishy rhythm track.
Basinskis stunningly gorgeous loops emerge as uncontainable, gauzy strains of primeval elegance -- arrestingly affecting in a manner entirely separate from classifiable feeling, beyond quantifiable emotion, and wholly independent of the graspable thought-world. Left to disperse, expand, and dissipate around the marble columns and up into the canopy of the vaulted ceilings, the sounds and reverberations filled the space as if inextricably embedded into the fabric of their natural environment.

I wouldn't ordinarily mention stuff from album blogs, but Orgy in Rhythm currently has a unique thing: a Brit Jazz comp, planned to be the third in a series curated by Gilles Peterson, that got killed by the label. The producer gave the blogger his OK to make the mp3's available. Interesting stuff from artists whom, with few exceptions, I've never heard of.
The Decemberists - The King is Dead from their upcoming album (2011). This one features Gillian Welch and is every bit as cool as the rest of the Decemberists catalog. So if that works for you, give them and email and enjoy.
Thanks for pointing out The Decemberists track, Plong! I heard it on the radio on my way home from work and it's pretty enjoyable. May just be me, but I hear a LOT of XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" in it. Might just be the harmonica.
It is a decent track, 320k at that. I am looking forward to the new album, they have been consistently interesting for several years now. That is rare in a band these days.
Performed by Ilya Lipkin (guitars), Evgeniy Tkachev (percussion) and Vladimir Nikulin (bass). Tracks 1, 2, 3 were recorded at the Rushus Studio by the band; mixed and mastered by Alisa Coral at the KZI Studios (Moscow, Autumn 2008). Tracks 4, 5 were recorded live at the Kostarev studios; mixed and mastered by Alexander Kostarev. "Stories" includes previously unpublished tracks. Original artwork by Ilya Lipkin.
Review by Marvin the Blueshound:
The Russian jazz trio Rushus plays experimental jazz fusion that is almost impressionistic in style. It slowly drifts into your ears and caresses your mind. The primary artist for Rushus is guitarist Ilya Lipkin who has a distinctive Al DiMeola sound that most will find both exotic and relaxing. Yet on Japanese Prog they wander into progressive rock with enthusiasm. Stories is a fine collection of intelligent jazz tracks . - Free Albums Galore.
After flirting a little with the dub-reggae style here and there for a long time, with "Visions of a Psychedelic Ankara" Hayvanlar Alemi has finally realized their dream of making a dub-only record, but one that will tickle the fancy of the psych-rock lover. Includes covers of Eek-a-Mouse classic "Assassinator" and a legendary Turkish radio jingle, reworkings of some old Hayvanlar Alemi tunes, and a couple of improvisations.
Dacapo is once again doing its track of the day over December. Today's comes from Ars Nova's work on Heinrich Schütz's choral works, Weihnachtshistorie/Auferstehungshistorie (Nativity Story/Resurrection Story).
ETA: The longest track, "Jesus erscheint den Emmausjüngern", is probably the natural choice, and it is quite good. However, the Resurrection was an earlier composition and more of it had to be filled out by scholars. The Nativity (tracks 1-19) are the real treat, especially track 11, "Zum Bethlehem im jüdischen Lande", with wonderful brass accompanying the men's chorus and remnants of Renaissance polyphony. Tracks 3 and 19 will satisfy those looking for something like Handel.
