Mutantis posted over there about the free music from SXSW 2010.
  • Embarrassing question. What do I do with a torrent?

    Craig
  • Bit Torrent is open source software for peer-to-peer file sharing. I have used it twice in the past, checking everything for viruses before using/downloading. It wasn't current music, I should add -- old, old stuff or archives that appeared to be legit. No Russian stuff, either! I'm not sure about the legitimacy of downloading the SXSW stuff, since it is recent. I did download when free tracks were listed last year, but I'm not sure about these torrents. So what do you do? Install the software, download the torrent, then unpack it.
  • Thanks mommio! Obviously I've heard of torrents, but I've never done anything with them before, so I was a bit lost.

    From the Free Music Archive:
    Nadja - "Live @ ISSUE (2/12/2010)" (40:13)
(Nadja is Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff)

  • Four great freebies at the Big O. The Brubeck is a particular treat for me.

    Paul McCartney - B-Sides Himself

The Adams Extended Family - A good selection of Ryan Adams covering the Grateful Dead with a lot of help from Phil Lesh.

Dave Brubeck - Mass “To Hope” Live Live at “Salzburger Jazzherbst”, Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg, Austria, November 1, 2004. Ex FM stereo.

Rolling Stones - Keep Your Motor Running The soundtrack to the Rolling Stones’ Ladies And Gentlemen film. [Sister Morphine MORPH 45, 1CD] Unreleased soundtrack of 1972 US Tour, released 2005. Live in Texas, June 24 and 25, 1972. Mastered by Cool Cool Hand. Ex SBD stereo.
  • Well, as I approach my first year here, I suppose it's about time I made my second post. I'm not the fastest typer and didn't want to use up my 10000 characters too quickly. However, I see that xtrev has raised my limit to 50000 now, so I'll try to be a little more wordy. First off, a big THANK-YOU to everyone for all the freebies I've found here. Also, another BIG thank-you to Mutantis for continuing to make the New Releases thread. I've been using those threads almost continually, since he started posting them here, and contributing nothing. I don't know if that will change that much, as I do have a tough time just keeping up with the other place and I've already been out trying to turn over the compost piles. It so smells like spring approaching and I can hardly wait.

ps. I'm not sure how to preview this, so it will be what it will be.
  • Amazon is unusually rich this week, must be the Spring Weather.

Saddle Creek March 2010 Sampler, with two songs from The Rural Alberta Advantage.

French Kiss Sampler, Cut Off Your Hands and the Antlers

And Many Many More, featuring Merzbow, for those who need a sonic purge.

St Patrick's Day Sampler from the Karaoke Channel, for your next drunken Irish-themed Karaoke party. Yes, it has Danny Boy and Whiskey in the jar.

    Back to the free stuff:
    Bas Van Huizen:
Bas van Huizen is a sound and visual artist (video/animation) from Nijmegen the Netherlands. Together with Ezra Jacobs he runs Etherkreet records. A label focusing on electroacoustic and improvised music.

    - And finally on his own Etherkreet label:
    Dichterlicht
    - In his own words:
"I’d like to put my album Dichterlicht in the spotlight here as I consider it one of my better works.
It is available as a free download at Tibprod, but kind of buried in a big pile of other releases.
They also only link to the individual files. So I put it up in one convenient zip for your listening pleasure.
It’s one of my more uniform albums and I’m exploring some noisy territory. Couple that with the occasional dissonance and it might be a bit of an acquired taste. Yet there’s still a lot to discover if you dig through the grainy and distorted textures."
    - Enjoy !

I am a huge Dylan fan, so it is good to see a recording of Osaka, March 11, 2010 turn up on the Big-0. Charlie Sexton adds alot to the band, he was smoking when I saw Dylan in Chicago in October.

    /edit - fixed URL b/c I am an idiot
  • @ Plong42: Here's a Dylan link that works.
  • Experimental improvisation fans, here's a nice selection of live excerpts from on the premier eai labels Another Timbre.
  • The Big-O has a particularly rich collection of freebies this week, the highlight (for me) is the Doors - The Miami Incident. The historic value of the recording outweighs any recording flaws. Put the kids to bed and turn the lights down low and listen as the madness unfolds.

In honor of the recent Led Zeppelin drop, I'll point out Rotterdam 1980, released by Swingin' Pig. This is one of Bonham's last shows.

DR has a good concert of German-language Cabaret by Helene Gjerris. The sound quality suffers, but the performance are enjoyable. Nothing surprising in terms of song selection. There's no song listing, but I believe these were performed:

Kinder, heute Abend suche ich mir aus
    Ich wei

  • Amazon is offering a CBGB Sampler, from when punk was real.

Here is all 45 freebies, several Steve Kilbey tunes for free.
  • Another Blueshound find: Karen Cooper Complex - Shinjuku Birdwalk. Quoting Blueshound: "The tracks show traces of Zappa, The Residents and Furious Pig in a cross between 60s Beat generation poetry and 80s No-Wave." Sounds real good to me.

KCC group member Bill Altice notes that his previous group Bomis Prendin also has albums on freemusicarchive.org that sound interesting too.

  • In case you don't read the Whirling Dervish thread:

I did not see this mentioned above: Sufi Music collection, free downloads. There are nine Dervish recordings at the top of the list, I am listening to one identified as "Turkish dervish whirling music." While there is a great deal of info on the site about instruments and styles, these files are not tagged well. I am hoping that other recordings on the page are better tagged.
