  • I am now listening to my mix of Pitchfork's Top 100 songs of 2011. Every year I compile what I have from their list into an iTunes playlist. This year I have 53 of the 100.

I only have 7 of the tracks - not sure what that says about me, especially as my 7 include two by Bon Iver and two by Adele!
  • It says you have two of the 47 I don't have!

    Craig
  • I'm 100% un-hip this year: I have zero tracks on the list.
  • I think I have three songs from the Pitchfork 100 - two from the Bon Iver album, which is OK but I only own it because it was $2 or something one day on Amazon, and possibly the track by Liturgy which I think was a free download (if it''s the one I have somewhere). None of the songs in the Pitchfork top 100 would make my top 100. I have two albums from Craig's top 20, (Hecker & Stetson) and one of them (the Stetson) would make my list. I'm obviously pretty unhip too.
  • By comparing yourself to me and then stating you are unhip, you are insinuating I am hip. I can assure you that is not the case. Ergo you are actually the hip one.

    Craig
  • If by hip you mean that a dozen of my son's Kindergarten friends think I'm neat, then yes!

On the other hand, being beholden to Pitchfork's tastes is like being tortured by the Malebranche.

Current listening: Recollage by Erik Nilsson.

This is really nice. Review to appear soon at Music is Good.
  • Prof, I glanced through the product description and, perhaps influenced by the carnivore cover art, read "to help serve those hurt by lionesses" rather than "loneliness"
  • GP . . . That Hibernate/Home Normal comp. looks very interesting and reminded me about this brilliant album, posted by yours truely back in june @ the New & Notable and just added to my 2011 Best Of. . . list:

Daniel Thomas Freeman - The Beauty Of Doubting Yourself

"Daniel Thomas Freeman is a founding and current member of Rameses III, the South London group who in the last ten years have released ambient / drone / folk albums on labels such as Type, Important, Digitalis and Under The Spire and who have supported such genre luminaries live as Stars Of The Lid, Current 93, Murcof, Fursaxa, James Blackshaw, Yellow Swans and Astral Social Club.

The Beauty Of Doubting Yourself is a deeply personal document from the Rameses III musician Daniel Thomas Freeman. Written over a period of six years this instrumental album is split into three movements chronologically representing the artist’s deep depression, his slow transition to recovery and his eventual experience of grace.

Whereas Rameses III’s music is designed to instill beauty and peace with every release, this album is a challenging yet rewarding listen in its own right whilst keeping the luxurious depth of the later Rameses III recordings . . . . ."

  • @Doofy, LOL! (Especially as it's an Oxford charity - lots of problems with lionesses in Oxford I'm sure).
@Brighternow, that one's high up my best of 2011 list as well. Remarkable album.

Yes I saw three or four lions wandering around Oxford a few weeks ago when I was last there!!! I've listened to a few tracks so far - different (for me), interesting, enchanting in places. For someone like me the familiar themes help of course.

  • Colin Stetson - Judges, then Anti NY

I have 18 of pfork's top 100 tracks. 3 of those were from free mix tapes. 4 were in the top ten.

I have 6 from their 50-21 albums, 1 of those was a free Mixtape, another was Colin Stetson, and my highest ranking was The Caretaker, which everyone should go to Bandcamp and buy, because it's so good.

The vast majority of stuff I did have was from amazon deals - emu's changes really made me not get a lot of stuff I would have in another year.

And I found 1 free Mixtape that I want to check out. I think for me this is the year of the free Mixtape. It took me a while to figure out how much great free Mixtape music was being given away, but now I'm on board.

@Greg: I'm never going to be able to think of him as anything other than Bob Iver now.
  • I have my eye on 'Way Out East'

Two-disc set nicely priced on Amazon or eMu
  • Sorry about that amclark - the letters B, N and M keys on my keyboard have worn out, and I'm regularly geting them wrong. I ought to be able to touch type by now but still look down, and still get it wrong! The number of times I've put in enusic lately is quite high!! Munner (number) has happened several times lately too!

  • Don't apologize - I like Bob way better than Bon. In fact I'm going to apply it to Bob Jovi and Bob Scott too.

I got this a couple month ago either right when it was released or possibly even an advance copy (the producer is a good friend of mine). I listened to it a bit when I first got it and then put it aside to revisit when there was less distractions flying around. Since I'm working from home this week I remebered I had this and have spun it a couple times over the last 2-3 days. I like it very much and would suggest that anyone with a passing interest in prog-rock and/or King Crimson at least give it a try via the available samples or the full length song 'videos' available on youtube.

I'm going to use Bob when I speak French, "je suis tres Bob!"
