  • El Guincho - Pop Negro

This keeps growing on me with every listen.
  • Change Leopardon - Airport at Dawn/Red Afternoon free at Bandcamp - I'm really loving what this guy is doing - chill, hypnagogic, drone, synth, some guitar, sometimes reverie vocals- although this is an instro single - check it out, somebody.

Actually sat and listened to this while reading the story...may well write about this (and the new label it's from) for the blog if I have any energy at the weekend.

(etre) - Inferno From My Occult Diary

"(etre) is the project of Italian experimental musician Salvatore Borrelli and “Inferno From My Occult Diary” is his strongest work to date. (etre) layers a multitude of instruments, electronics and field recordings to create a dream like snap-shot of a particular time and place in his life. His musical approach is based on new and old methods of reworking soundscapes including minimalism, improvisation and electro-acoustic. Emotionally “Inferno From My Occult Diary” evokes a dark ritualistic tone but with cracks of warmth and humanity scattered about."

I really like this album. It's also on eMu (probably), but no point linking there at the moment!

Free at emusic - thanks BN. I eventually was able to download by closing down emusic totally a couple of times, then logged in and pasted in the web page, and it actually downloaded. If I have to do that regularly other sites will soon start getting more of my custom

. . ."One of those quiet, head down collaborators who folks seem to want to work with. Over the years he was part of Can guitarist Michael Karoli’s band Sofortkontakt! He’s toured with Michael Rother of Neu! and Dieter Moebius of Cluster and remixed Faust. He made albums with James Plotkin and worked with Mick Harris of Scorn. During his time in Vancouver, he became part of Download and has remained in close musical contact with cEvin Key and Phil Western. Just finished:

Genevieve Letarte - "Chansons d'un jour"
-Released back in the 90's on a Canadian avant-garde label, it just dropped on emusic a couple weeks ago as part of a label drop. It's amazing.

I wrote this about the album, in part, for my weekly new arrivals column at emusic...
This album has a foot in several music camps: The chanteuse avant-garde jazz of 1960s cafes, the seventies psychedelia of Nico & Velvet Underground, and even the bouncy electronic rhythms of Stereolab. The song “Le Journal” with its swirling and sliding guitar, Genevieve’s deadpan vocal inflections, and the keyboard’s chipper good cheer is about as addictive as a song can get without requiring rehab.

OK...so another side effect of the emusic redesign/implosion is that it is no longer a good place from which to link cover art.

Solo and ensemble music for glass bellbowls, mbiras, voice, toy pianos, electronics and devolved musical instruments, featuring vocalist Eda Maxym

"The "Song" in Song + Distance refers not to the various popular song structures we hear everyday but, rather, to the concept of expression. The song in "singing one's heart out." The "Distance" refers to the concept of experience. The moment we experience something we are immediately at a distance from it. We retain our experience of the event but not the event itself. The song helps us choose the quality of this distance and the depth of the experience. Song and distance, expression and experience, emotion and memory, melody and the sounds around us."

Tribe Of Astronauts-- The Journey Of Ra [treetrunk 181] (October 23, 2011)

"According to Ancient Egyptian myth, every night the God Ra journeys through the underworld, where he fights an important battle. He must win this battle and complete his journey for the sun to rise the next morning in Egypt.

The anonymous collective The Tribe Of Astronauts, long fascinated with Ancient Egypt, have assembled an EP-length ambient piece sonically exploring Ra's journey."

I really, really, really want to listen to this.... this is in my vinyl collection which hasn't seen the light of day in 15-20 years. I'd love to be able to get access to a digital copy.... may have to take my vinyl copy to my brother's this coming Christmas and have him use his USB-connected turntable to rip it for me.....
