Mark McGuire - A Young Person's Guide to Mark McGuire
McGuire normally plays with Emeralds; this is his solo stuff, a collection of guitar-based meditations. I am still trying to weigh up whether to fork over $11.98 for the whole double album (147 minutes) on emusic, or whether to cherry pick several of the 9 minute tracks and make myself an excellent 40 minute album for less than $3. Obvious as the choice seems stated that baldly, especially given the recognition that not every track is equally compelling, I am finding myself swayed by the music itself, for which I think "winsome" would be a perfect word, towards just getting the whole thing. Maybe this is what that free $8.99 is for, to let me pretend without really having to pretend that the whole thing cost me $3. Amazing how quickly that promotional credit psychologically becomes real money, though.
@BT, thanks, I'll check that out. Will have to decide whether $8.99 in real money is cheaper for me in the end that $11.98 in emu money. Will depend what else I really want before refresh date, I suspect. Good to know there's that alternative though. Very few other places have this release on MP3.
@BT, there's so many parallel universes in which to do the mental math :-)
There's the universe in which if I get this at 7dig, I can get *two* (or more) albums at emusic with the $11.98 in credit that I don't use up on it there, so that for an extra $8.99 in total expenditure I end up with three albums instead of one.
There's the similar but vaguer universe in which if I buy it at 7dig, I get to download more things at emusic that don't actually feel as if they are costing me anything because the money went into the account without me noticing almost a month ago, so I end up with more music without subjectively feeling too profligate.
There's the universe in which emusic will give me a fictional $9 tomorrow that I was not expecting, and so the McGuire would "really" cost me less than $3, given my $2 monthly emusic bonus.
There's the universe in which the math works as you suggest, the real amount paid resulting from applying the ratio between money paid to emusic and the emusic credit available. And this can be done with or without counting the twitter bonus as "real" credit. (Non-real credit is mentally useful sometimes. I was able to persuade myself to download O by Oval for $12 by telling myself that $9 of it was not my money, but an emu promo)
In the end it will be whichever whim strikes when my finger is closest to the download button. I can't help wondering what Nietzsche would have written about online music purchasing.
Loving the music though. Almost finished all 2.5 hours on spotify and continue to be delighted. Definitely going to get the whole thing.
On a side note, Steeleye Span rerecorded a bunch of their songs, including the entire Now We Are Six album. It sounds a lot more like the Blackbeard's Tea Part, which was Greg's rec. $5.84 at eMu for 90 minutes.

ETA, this is just perfect music to work to.
It's $7.85 with the twitter bonus.

Thanks Tom . . .
I was just thinking the other day that I really needed to find an inexpensive copy of this album. Then Google put it on sale. Thanks Google!

Have we seen this netlabels blog before? Hasn't been active for quite a while, though.

When I downloaded this I divided the 42 tracks into 5 smaller albums so that I might actually listen to it. Greatly enjoying the fifth now.
Bullpen blows lead, runner thrown out at home in the 9th...Yep, that's the Cubs all right!
