- Following up on my previous post re. Previte/Hunter, the freshly added @ BC:
- In flac, grabbed from Bandcamp. Unfortunately it's no longer there: RECORDED LIVE
Recorded 4,5 February 2003 at GoodandEvil Studio, Brooklyn, NY. by Chris Kelly
released 05 January 2012
Charlie Hunter: eight string guitar
Bobby Previte: electronics, electronic drums
- "Come in Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader was the first recorded meeting of eight-string wunderkind Charlie Hunter and master drummer/composer Bobby Previte, but it went so well that they decided to make an ongoing project of it called Groundtruther where the two of them play with a rotating third member (similar to Samm Bennett and Tom Cora's Third Person). However, this is just the two of them and although the album was "recorded live as all get out, baby," it's sometimes difficult to believe. Charlie Hunter is pretty well known for sounding like more than one person on his eight-string guitar, but Bobby Previte's electronic hybrid drum set allows him to do much the same thing with triggered samples. Previte's got an unreal setup, with a wild set of assorted sounds and triggers, and apparently the ability to manipulate them on the fly while continuing to keep the beat! It's an odd and wonderful mixture of drums, cymbals, sampled vocals and who-knows-what that is both highly entertaining and highly musical. And once you latch on to Hunter's simultaneous basslines and leads, it's hard to fathom that Previte is totally responsible for the rest of the music. Charlie Hunter's various projects have always been fun, but Previte's palette of sounds substantially ups the loopy quotient and gives this project a charm all its own. Fans of either musician should check this out, as should anyone interested in a groovy, quirky good time."

Alexandre St-Onge - Electric bass and vocals assisted by computer.
Alexander Wilson - Vocals, percussion, synths, studio, assisted by computer.
Jonathan Parant - Electric guitar (MIDI), assisted by computer
- K.A.N.T.N.A.G.A.N.O. first appeared in Montreal when Jonathan Parant (Fly Pan Am, Feu Thérèse) joined an earlier duo formed by Alexander Wilson (01ek, Parabolik Guerilla) and Alexandre St-Onge (Shalabi Effect, Feu Thérèse). But there is evidence that suggests that was a cover-up for a deeper, stranger aspect of K.A.N.T.A.G.A.N.O.s formation ; a singular event, a convergence of sensations being experienced in several bodies at once, the diffraction of psychological and emotional rainbows through the prism of their live music sessions. It is said that a rich blend of golden Cavendish, a selection of medium-priced wines and a strange respiratory device made of discarded laboratory equipment were present at every session. Sometimes there were also complex rituals involving mirror tables, tiny crumpled pieces of paper, animal skeletons, invisible molecules, and a custom computer program that ciphers acronyms. As fluency progressively became their thing, they experimented with music that moved fluently from their influences to their defluences, oscillating at light speed between sonic nausea and sonic euphoria. They soon learned to tune their frequencies to call the monsters of the abyss to rise to the twinkling stars, with every beat of the slaughtered pig, with every strum of their unicorns and waterfalls "

Aouw. I thought this was going to be more spacey tinkles...I mean, just look at the cover. But not so much. Opening track, "Don Cherry's Electric Sonic Garden" really brings the thunder, not to mention the fonk. Good stuff.
I can see how some people are hearing an update on "Bitches Brew," but there's more to it than that. I got this at mTraks, where it is a great deal but nearly impossible to find due to abysmal search function.
Frahm/Arnalds update: heard back from Erased Tapes and apparently the strange cutoff at the end of track 2 is intended that way by the artists. So go ahead and buy it now.
Is there anywhere to stream it first? My memory is telling me that Erased Tapes was usually pretty good with that, but I'm coming up empty on my searches.
Hm, actually let me check my spelling on those searches. I wonder if that was the problem.
@ Jonah . . . Soundcloud - I can also recommend the live recording posted @ the free stuff thread, especially Nils Frahm´s set is seriously out of this world.

Ólafur Arnalds & N. Frahm - Zurich 31.03.2012[/i]
Here's what VR writes about it:
- "An extraordinary concert from two firm favourites here at Victoryrosemusic. The quality isn't great and due to various issues there is a track or two missing. However it was such an amazing performance I thought it worth a post. Think of it as a preview of great things to come! Ólafur talks a lot in this concert which is great to hear as well."
- Except for a few sound hickups it's really not that bad, and the music is awesome !
Led to it in a roundabout way via Mark Heard. Heard produced John Austin's debut CD shortly before he died. Reading that fact reminded me that I had some John Austin CDs from back in the day when I was getting a lot of my stuff from Paste Magazine.
The Yellow 6 mention reminded me of a concert I went to see in London. It was a free one at lunchtime with Epic 45 and July Skies which was held in the Union Chapel which is located in Islington which is a posh part of London. I took my good lady who absolutley hated it, Epic 45 forgot to bring any discs and it cost me a small fortune taking my good lady out for a decent meal. By the way I thought the gig was great and play all 3 bands whenever I need peace and quite in the spare room while I am working, clears my good lady out of the room very quickly!
Had to sit through a graduation today, and for reasons I cannot explain the Talking Heads was going through my head the whole time. It's a wild, wild, life.
Very nice, free download. Also a testament to the power of words to misdirect. I downloaded this some time back and dumped it in a folder where I dump stuff that I have not yet unzipped, retagged, and generally spruced up for insertion into the iTunes library. There's all kinds of stuff in there, and it sometimes festers there for quite a while. So I had forgotten the original context for this, and where and why I found it. And its name had started putting me off and postponing the eventual listen - when I fancied unzipping something I kept passing it by.
Is it just me, or is it not the case that if you look at a folder called "Dragon's Eye Recordings" and the album is titled "Leather" (and you can't see the above cover art) it brings to mind something other that delicate, atmospheric drone pieces?
Turns out that's what it is, and it's good listening. Suddenly I want to explore this label further. I have two more of these in the folder of unheard things, "Flower" and "Iron" and I'm now downloading "Wood" - suddenly I want to hear them. Which means I just gained three albums that I'm looking forward to!

Really good stuff, BN--hot guitar playing. I'm just streaming now, but I'll drop some bills on it later.

Guitar-based instrumentals in the styles of Robert Fripp and Robin Guthrie. Decent. NYOP
New Marty Stuart
- A real bargain here in Europe and some of his more "easy listening" stuff . . . . .
Which reminds me, did we ever find out who put that bullet hole in Peggy's kitchen wall?
That's a 'deluxe edition' nicely priced at AMZ, btw
