Rachael McShane is best known as the cellist, singer, fiddle player (and only girl!) in 11-piece folk big-band Bellowhead. She is now embarking on a solo career, working alongside musicians whose backgrounds are rooted more in jazz, soul and funk than in folk. Rachaels band, featuring James Peacock piano, Jonathan Proud bass and Adam Sinclair drums, combine their eclectic influences to create interesting and exciting arrangements of traditional songs. Her debut album is rich with tales of many men, ranging from kind-hearted, well-meaning gentlemen to thieves, mysterious strangers and somewhat sinister characters. However it is the shrewd and audacious women who shine through in these traditional songs.
@PaulR - I have that Gjallarhorn album. Haven't listened to it in a long time, but it's a really great album. (I think I may have mentioned that one in my MiG "Music that has influenced me" piece.)
Babylon By Bus courtesy of Amazon's $3.99 imitation of Google's sale of the week - a Marley album I hadn't acquired up to now - seemed righteous thing to do.
Would you believe this downloaded tagged Pop? With all the damn things that get tagged Reggae from various download sources that aren't Reggae, this is Pop? Too funny.
Currently listening to My Hand is a Dolphin by Flying Jellyfish. Who happens to be my daughter. Who went away to university a year ago to study dance, started learning the accordion at Christmas, and now, home for the summer, has discovered the hobby of composing chiptune music on an antique gameboy. This is her first track. She was excited today that someone downloaded it from soundcloud, so if any of you have a tolerance for chiptune as a genre and fancy downloading this bouncy little number...
