Since embarking on the effort (about 14 months ago I think) I have now finished listening to everything in my iTunes library plus everything in my dump-until-I-can-unzip-and-tag-it folder. There is not an unlistened to album on my system. Hmm, what should I download....
This is from a couple of years ago but I just discovered it and have not seen it mentioned here I don't think. Another entry in the modern classical vein, Fires by Le Lendemain. Le Lendemain are Danny Norbury (a cellist who has recorded with The Boats recently) and David Wenngren (who has been releasing stuff under that name and as Library Tapes). More nice meditative piano/cello pieces - very nice indeed. For those who like Peter Broderick, Olafur Arnalds, etc - recommended.
Long story, the short version is that a few months ago I switched to a new laptop without Firewire, so my music library is still on the old laptop and the ext. Firewire drive with the music is in a drawer. All this time I've been playing stuff in Spotify and off the Web. I've had no need to plug the ext. drive back in.
Dr. M, except for a few details that's my story. Old computer died, its hd with my music is literally in a drawer, and I keep meaning to do something about it but I haven't felt any urgency, both because I keep adding new music and because of Spotify. I still plan to do that, though. Once in a while I miss some things on it.
Germanprof, it's a coincidence that I first saw your Sacred Steel post today after I heard a story today on NPR about sacred steel music.
Amclark2, definitely agree with you about Glen Campbell. That his voice is not as perfect as it once was makes it more emotionally resonant for me. It's sort of like climbing up a rock wall compared to climbing a wall of sheer glass, if that makes any sense.
Now listening:
I decided it's time at last to listen to the whole thing, from beginning to end.
Edit: My, that was much better than I expected. They're better without being buried in echo as they often are when recorded. I think they're coming to Red Rocks this summer; I might have to go see them.
I loved Husker back on the day, but I have to say I almost never have a desire to hear them nowadays, and . . . I dunno, maybe not excited to hear them mentioned as an influence on a new band? Somewhat ashamed to say that.
Now, I also read somewhere that The Men recorded a new song that sounds something like an updated Cortez The Killer. That intrigues me.
Matt Ulery's Loom - "Music Box Ballerina"
-Currently one of my favorites on the scene. Jazz, classical, avant-garde, lullabies. He's a Chicago guy, for those of you who live thataways.
released 25 March 2011
Lars Winther (comp. arr.)
Emil de Waal (remix)
Mike Sheridan (remix)
Julian Falck (remix)
Kristian Martinsen (remix)
Mikkel Engel Gemzøe (remix)
Fine solo piano album, recommended by some jazz blogger. She closes the album with a delicate rendering of the ballad "And So It Goes," which I am surprised to learn was written by...

I'll still haven't got even half, and it must be 45 plus years since I bought my first Dylan LP!
Now playing Blonde on Blonde as this prompted me to realise I hadn't played any Dylan in ages.

Which is lame. In a fantastic and incredibly enjoyable way.
Then
Yes, this is good. Has anybody mentioned Husker Du? I hear some Husker Du here. Which is never a bad thing.

Olafur Arnalds - "...and they have escaped the weight of darkness"
Said to hear of MCA's passing. I've always really liked Beastie Boys and just went through a revisit period last autumn... music so good.
