I'm not normally the biggest fan of mixes, preferring fully formed tracks and albums to a series of snippets. But this free, hour-long mix by Peter van Cooten is totally absorbing.
-News that a companion album to Psychic Temple is due out later this year. Between that and the new Brian Blade Fellowship album, my music year has plenty to look forward to.
Was just looking back over the Luxus Arctica releases. They are a low-volume netlabel, but so far every release has been a keeper. And I see Visuelle Musik has a new release out there.
I happened across this at the library the other day and I'd never heard it. I didn't like this album all that much in its original version, finding it sappy, but this is interesting. Stripping off a lot of the studio gloss, bringing John's voice to the forefront, reveals that at that point he was singing as well as he ever had. His voice displays intelligence, as always, and warmth, but in this version there's a feeling that his peace had been hard-won. Unfortunately, bringing his voice out also means bringing Yoko's voice out, and that's a real problem.
i actually dig some of this album, and to say i'm worn-out and bored with all things beatles-related is an understatement.
if i never, ever hear imagine again, i'll be just fine. but give me some of this lennon album, and that george harrison tribute to the beatles (all those years ago) and his big jeff-lynne pop album from the mid-80s.
"An excellent album" No Depression "She has one of those voices you want to crawl up close to the speakers to listen to." --MOJO Magazine The beauty lives behind a veil, Jess Klein passionately sings on the rock- influenced title track of her new new album. The songs on Behind A Veil are a direct result of a personally challenging 2011 for Jess; losing her father to a 5 year battle with ALS, splitting with a lover, and the self-empowering decision to move forward with no management or record label. Jess explains: You never really know what the big picture is to a situation - sometimes the meaning is veiled. It can seem really bad, but then later you can look back at the same moment and feel so grateful it went that way; I love that about life. Sometimes things are just really hard and really painful, but also beautiful. Jess continues to consistently tour the U.S, U.K. and Europe and will be touring nationally with a full band supporting the release.

I have played this about 3 times this weekend, one of the best so far this year.
