- "Derek Bermel's CD of orchestral works:
From the melodic roots of West Africa to the infectious grooves of Bulgarian folk music, the CD's four orchestral works meld Bermel's love for orchestral and jazz music with a myriad of unlikely global traditions and influences." http://www.derekbermel.com
- "With Mescaliners phenomenal debut, Eye, the band finds a new niche in instrumental post-rock by uniting sounds from various genres in a live, palpable atmosphere. Such a dynamic infuses the music a current of humanity in the sense that melodies emerge from live takes, making them an instinctive and immediate product of the musicians themselves. According to the band's website, it is a self-proclaimed ambient/experimental/jam band, but the music on this album redefines these labels and sets forth music that can't be broken down by a simple genre comparison. Given Mescaliner's affinity for live jamming, its musical approach of conceiving live pieces for studio recording bears resemblance to King Crimson, yet stylistically it's removed from the Crimson's sound. To think that songs with such musical cohesion were recorded in a single day only refines ones appreciation for the bands musical creation. . . . ."
Haven't listened to all of greg's African windfall from the other day yet, but this is far and away my favorite of what I have listened to so far. Delightfully gentle-spirited. Loving it.
ETA, sadly, this has to be one of the dumbest reviews I have ever read of anything. The comments under it are in the same league. Thank the heavens for emusers.
Remember when this was all the rage and hype a couple of years ago? They quietly split up earlier this year. I worry about all the stuff like this that's out there that just disappears as people move on to the next blogged micro-genre. It's really great though still; I think I like it more now than I did then. I think if I ever found time for MiG, (and I just may in the relatively near future) I would try to focus on things between two and seven years old; not old enough to be classic, not new enough to be fresh. It seems like there's a lot out there like that, and frequently if I don't catch it within a month or two, I miss it altogether.
@amclark2, that's a good target topic. I was thinking as well the other day it would be fun to review some things that are not new but really good and not that we'll known.
@GP - thank goodness that neither emusers or MiG is like that site. I, too, am still going through all I downloaded that day! Several are likely to appear today on this thread, as I am home for most of the day marking (grading) assignments.
Weird - I still cannot get images to come up. I copied this from one I'd previously used, so I've done it correctly. I'm going to swap from Safari to Explorer to see if that makes a difference!
Thanks PaulR - a good idea, but no it is BB Code. It is working OK with Explorer. I need to check my Safari settings. I had a big Apple upgrade a few days ago, so that might have changed something
- "O Darkness! O Darkness's! fugue of subtlety; its thick economy of sound; its held inhales; its slow shivers--tis a tense and beautiful experimental shadow play that demands a deafening before it will truly to the inner ear speak. As challenging as it is rewarding,"

It worked OK in Explorer
Nice minimalist glitch from Norway. Free/NYOP.
