Rolling still cheap on Amie Street thread

  • Looks promising but all the RED stuff I've noticed so far is US only - hooray for Sony!
Plus, I'm not seeing the amount of new releases you guys are, the flow has increased slightly over the last day or so (in the UK), but still only a few per hour and nothing I've been interested in for days now (apart from a Morcheeba with Judie Tzuke single).

xtrev - It was literally 10 or so per minute there for awhile (looks like it might be done now). I gave up trying to even come close to keeping up.

Plong42 - I agree. Amie is making a grab for eMusic's market share, and based on how quickly the prices were rising and how wonky the site got for awhile, they just might succeed.

EDIT: thom, thanks for mentioning that Doughty EP. That was the one I didn't have, and it appears to have a Neutral Milk Hotel cover. Mike Doughty covering Neutral Milk Hotel? Sign me up. If you don't have it I highly recommend Half Smof too.

  • Yeah, I almost flipped when I saw that cover. The sample sounded great. The only song I skipped was "Busting Up a Starbucks" because it's on Haughty Melodic. Unfortunately Half Smofe cuts out a lot of material from the full Smofe + Smang CD - none of the witty banter and no "Firetruck"!
  • The full Smofe + Smang is indeed excellent, but at least Half Smofe has the Sunkeneyed Girl and Grey Ghost "bridges" that kill me every time. My buddy was actually at that show. I am eternally jealous.

Getting my copy of Half Smofe signed by Mike Doughty is not nearly as cool.

  • Holy crap. I didn't realize that "The Gambler EP" meant THAT Gambler. This could be the greatest cover/song ever.

  • It's on the border line of qualifying as "still cheap" but I need to point out Jack Penate's new album. I snagged it yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying it thus far. It falls under the rock or alternative umbrellas, but you can really hear a lot of influences in it from world to jazz. I particularly enjoy the track "Let's All Die" that sounds like the type of song I want played at my funeral when I want to lighten the mood. Creepy, I know, but I once had a friend ask me what kind of music I would want at a funeral, and ever since then I've tended to identify songs like this.

  • @cafreema Thanks for the Penate tip, I enjoyed Matin
  • 50% off today. I'd write more but I have some serious purchasing to get to...
  • Huzzah! I was down below $1.00 after The xx popped up yesterday, so a 50% off sale can't come at a better time.

elwood - No problem on the Penate. That's the point of the thread, after all!

    Craig
  • That's right download that xx album. I RECed all the tracks when it was free.... It's a good album, I've listened to it a couple of times already.
  • Looks like another deluge!
  • Then you made some money off me! I got it at about $3.50. Liking it a lot so far.

    Craig
  • Kylie Auldist - Made of Stone.

Very Funky. Think Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings crossed with Tina Turner.
  • I'm d/ling just about everything on Tru Thoughts at this point. What an incredible label.
  • @thom, I hit that label so hard last month when they showed up on Amie Street I didn't walk straight for a week.
  • New Flaming Lips track: See The Leaves.

Just one track, but still free and the Flaming Lips!

    Craig
  • a lot of the stuff rec'd by the hip kids at 17dots is available at good prices on amie street.

i was feeling a shortage of latest trendy kinda stuff so last night i got Walter Jones, Girls, the Drums and Toro y Moi and am enjoying it all (warning about the Toro y Moi though; 2 of the tracks didn't download; currently have a call into cs)

also: was seriously stoked to find dragging an ox through water over there. good weird shit.

I have been catching up with actually listening to some recent Amie finds, and want to second cafreema's review of the new Jack Penate. Not what I was expecting, more instrumented, pretty harmony backup vocals, songs with an edge. Currently 4 bucks.

Also, forget who recc'd it, but I am also enjoying Trampled by Turtles. Good contemporary bluegrass album with excellent playing...not particularly cheap anymore.

I also picked up many of the Mainstream albums, lots to listen to!
  • I highly recommend "The Door" by Brian Citro & Charles Gorczynski with the Salamander Ensemble. A couple experimental jazzers from Chicago. A little bit of Dosh, a little bit of Todd Sickafoose, but I'm struggling to describe this album. It's just under five bucks now, but I really like this album a lot.

  • Doofy, Trampled By Turtles was me too, so I'm glad you like them both!

I was out of town this weekend, and don't really have the time to scroll through the new arrivals, anyone care to summarize any new stuff that has appeared since Thursday?

  • Stumbled across TKW Band yesterday - ammateurish, a little psychedelic, extremely skewed, a bit of west africa and a bit of Hawaii, and a bit of the U.S. Navy. I'm loving this and foolishly throwing lots of rec's at it. it seems to me that this should be huge, but there's no way it ever could be. anyway it's still free...
  • Surprisingly, Sarah McLachlan's Afterglow has appeared and is still free.

    Craig
  • Got a great deal on the new Mayer Hawthorne:

  • The new buzzed about Wild Beasts just arrived and is still free: Two Dancers.

    Craig
  • The new one from Infected Mushrooms, still cheap.

And the new Phish album, not free and bordering on not cheap.
  • my first amie street rec

it is free. would like to see the artist get up into the "paid" range, so if a few of you could give this some love...

also, mebbe this should be it's own thread, but ian whalen - is he everyamie's myspace tom? well, there you have it, i have my first amiefriend.

  • Ian Wahlen is the name given for every tech support message I have received from AmieStreet. I assumed it was the generic name, but I also doubt the existence of the Historical Yancey.
