There are times I wonder why I listen to anything other than Radiohead. Laying at home with a fever to the amazing back to back of "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" is one of those times apparently.
Got five tracks from Guvera, then realized that the two tracks over ten minutes long are missing from Guvera. Luckily, in sort of a reversal, the long tracks are only $.89 each at amazon. But watch out on these Black Lion releases - I think they're missing a lot of the long tracks at emu too.
- Checking out the brand new addition to the Experimedia catalogue on Emusic:
- "Superstorms, a new solo project by ex-Tusco Terror/sometimes Trouble Books member Michael Tolan, is born out of creative impulses that are simultaneously subversive of and sensitively attuned to their musical lineage(s). Frustrated and bored with the tropes of contemporary ambient music, Tolan began experimenting with harsh digital samples and clipping source material, finding himself liberated at the prospect of productively using sounds which previously would have been left to lie dormant on the cutting room floor. He began working with a palette comprised of in-the-red, bit-crushed digitalia, setting to work kneading these stubborn blocks of harsh sound into a sequence of five pieces which, despite their considerable barbs, retain the fluidity and pathos of the ambient tradition from which they were inspired. Tolan's Tusco Terror/harsh noise connections rear their head in the form of both the intensely prickly and pointillistic aspects of each composition and by way of the informal, spontaneous, almost punk sensibilities which they each possess. Indeed, Superstorms is at once organic and robotic, forceful and calm, coherent and unpredictable. In short, it is a meshing of oppositions- binaries smashed together and expertly sculpted into truly powerful sonic miasma.
Michael Tolan is also known for his project as Moustache Mountain and as a member of the band Talons'."

- "How can I possibly describe the music of Vincent Bergeron? A surreal French cabaret? Pierrott Lunaire on acid? The only thing Im sure of is that you have never heard anything like it before. Bergeron, as well as I can understand it, takes sound samples from practically everything, cut them up is small pieces, and pastes them together in a sort of sound mosaic. Then he adds his own voice, which itself has a eerie but charming quality, and cuts that up to fit his instrumental creation. All of this is assembled into a well structured lyrical composition. This is some of the most original music Ive heard in a long time. In todays terms, this is beyond bizarre. In the future, it will probably be called brilliant."

@GP - yes Tinariwen are utterly amazing live. Something I won't forgewt in a hurry. Totally fifferent - I haven't heard Hergest Ridge in decades, I must try to find it somewhere.
I'm home alone for the next week, other than the cat ('other half' is on the way to Ghana on an exchange visit with a school there, the house already feels quiet for a Saturday, so some music needed
@GermanProf "the quiet passages are inaudible at the levels I need it at so that the loud passages don't startle colleagues."
This is true, I have occasionally had a visitor in the office during a quiet moment, and then suddenly a crescendo. One guy asked "what's the deal with the music?" I told him it was time for him to leave. I have picked out several more Giya Kancheli albums from Guvera, several with two or three long tracks. I'll post a few links on the guvera thread later. Meanwhile, now listening to:
Covers of old 40s/50s tunes, Jeff Lynne style. (Beyond the Sea is really quite good, but I always liked that little tune.)

Only nine physical copies left direct from offthesky - sold out at the label. Lovely stuff.
Not sure if I have mentioned this before, but rather good jazz vocals, 5 track sampler on Noisetrade
Then
Thanks Guvera and thanks whoever pointed out that Gainsbourg album; I've wanted that for a while.
Milton Nascimento and L

Used to have this on vinyl. Restored via Guvera.
Liking this.

Max Richter-Blue Notebooks
Going to have to buy this full price from bandcamp if emusic don't get it soon. I think it's going to be high on my best of 2012 list.

Blown. Away.
Amazing.
Tinariwen about to take the stage.
Good evening.
@AMC2: It's a fun album. I'm weighing whether it's worthwhile to get Gil's Cidade do Salvador.
