Bucking the trend! Turned onto this (and Blu Blu Blu) by a Kevin Whithead write-up on Muhal's 80s big band recordings over at eMu.

Never heard of Heath McNease. I read he is a hip-hop/rapper kind of artist but branches out into other genres, as well. I gave this CD a listen after being intrigued by the title. Really, really enjoying it. (Track 3 ventures into a little rap, which I usually hate, but found this quite nice.) Very impressive soundscapes. Free/NYOP at Noisetrade.

    Absolutely gorgeous. Just lovely.
  • I just spent 10 minutes on hold listening to a looped 1 minute Kenny G solo. Now I'm going to go throw myself out a window.

Farewell - It was nice knowing you.

Before you jump, try this as an antidote:

Meditative, but slightly disturbing at times."
  • I'm only on the 2nd floor, BN. So I'll live!

Hey, I think I took that chandelier Polaroid in 1981 at some dude's house where his parents were out of town so he had a party. I'm suing!

Meanwhile, groovy new sampler from Dave Douglas & Greenleaf Music

Seems to have some glitches; but maybe they're intentional?

    What's that top one BT?

Selvagem? by Os Paralamas do Successo: one of the first attempts to incorporate dub into Brazilian rock. The dub elements overwhelm several tracks, but overall a good album. One track was written by Gilberto Gil. It's also reputed to be a very political album, though I can't enjoy it at that level. (ETA: currently listening a second time, and I can hear more of the Tropicalia elements.)

    - "Oneida’s Thank Your Parents construct is an aesthetic object, a historical meditation, and a narrative experience. Available in modular component parts – three separate CD/LP releases – but envisioned as a cohesive whole, the triptych (as the band has dubbed it) offers a 200-minute portrait of Oneida as a form of “rock band.”

In a sense, the path of the band is utterly predictable: abandon and aggression expand to encompass relentless exploration; this is followed by a series of ecstatic revelations that eventually give way to a contemplative, brooding acceptance of something that is impossible to name or define in any way other than through an item such as Thank Your Parents: an irreducible whole.

Redolent of Oneida’s characteristic irreverence, the title of the triptych also offers a relatively straightforward acknowledgment of the cyclical, repetitive nature of the life experience and the timelessness of revelation. The expression of gratitude through performance of ritual or art appears to be a universal human urge, so please don’t blame Oneida . . ."
