Growing enjoyment of John Surman led to siphoning all his solo stuff from Guvera, which led to a collaboration album, which led to John Abercrombie. Enjoying this too.
This is on ECM New Series, so if it's on Guvera . . . Get it . . . if not, get it anyway !
I learned about it from a recommendation From Nereffid about 3 years ago on his blog.
- Here's what he wrote about it:
"These are electronic soundscapes based around some vocal music by 15th-century composer Guillaume Dufay. This had the potential to be nothing but gimmicky crossover, but it works well, for two main reasons: Field's electronica is generally understated and always anchored to the Dufay phrases, and John Potter is in wonderful voice. That said, it's the sort of album you need to be in the right frame of mind to listen to. That said, the opening track is one of the most gorgeous things ever."
My own two cents: I think the album title says it all, they are not performing Dufay they are being Dufay.
"Je Me Complains (live)". Tenor Voice and Electronics, featuring John Potter (tenor), recorded on tour at Parco della Musica, Rome, 26.02.2011. New music, based on original song fragments by Guillaume Dufay (1397 - 1474). Recorded from the back of the Auditorium.
Just had fun, with the aid of Wikipedia, organizing the relevant tracks from the Complete Blue Note Recordings into their original component albums (which are not cohesively present in the box set sequencing), while also keeping a copy of the box set. It's the same tracks in a new configuration but it will affect how I listen to them. And I like the original cover art better, and that matters too. So it now feels like I got 6 albums by downloading that box set.
Max Richter - Waltz with Bashir
G. This is great. Highly recommended. Those who enjoyed the bombast of the Daft Punk 'Tron' soundtrack will find things to like here, as well as any who like Max Richter's haunting violin minimalism. If you are skimping on tracks, note that Shadow Journal is also on The Blue Notebooks, in case you have that album. I guess you might also already have the OMD track, Enola Gay (which does not come up on Guvera if you search for the album by Max Richter, but is there if you search by album title)
Prof, great idea on the Herbie Nichols albums - I did that on the (excellent) Farmer/Golson Jazztet box. Makes them seem more like unique albums than "historical recordings"
Now we have BN finding Guvera recs for us! I'm getting it....a dual Brighter/Nereffid rec is good enough for me.
@GP - I'm still a jazz novice too. Basically I try to go through Jonah's Jazz Picks each week and download a couple that I like. Fortunately my grandfathered UK plan enables that. This is one from this week's picks.' It is three tracks long for 20 minutes, so only £1.26, which really means 60p with bonus. But how I wish we could have Guvera here!
Listening to Coal Miner's Daughter from G, and remembering these Crisco adds from when I was a kid; "hi, I'm Loretta Lynn"; I never understood why this lady in the Crisco commercials needed to introduce herself...

I found a live recording of track 2 on Soundcloud:

ETA:
Thanks to whoever posted this. If you can sit still through this whole album, you're dead.
I had to LOL at that idea - I certainly need some supervising!!
I'm not sure my esteemed supervisor would approve of this, though!!
One of the best Post Rock bands, part of their ambient series this is NYOP on Bandcamp

Second time through at a sitting. Something about this music invites you to keep listening.

Thanks, BN, (and Nereffid), lovely.

For those of you who do not know what to spend your Guvera credits on, you could do worse than Bill Wyman's Rhythmn Kings. Oh for that luxury!!
This album is really easy to listen to: swinging blues-rock.
