We seek to redefine traditional music distribution.
Digital files are easily lost by the impermanence of computing. Physical objects like CDs, tapes and records last far beyond their usability and possibly even our existence as a species.
Data Garden mitigates these challenges by releasing digital album codes on artwork that can grow into living plants. This addresses the need for easy access to music, as well as the natural human desire to own an awesome physical object.
How about "Bug" or "Rain" from Land by Porya Hatami (whose work I am just generally recommending at the moment. The Black Woodpecker is great, and the the Shallow album, which is also garden-suitable ("Fen"/"After the Rain"/"White Forest"), is sublime).
Well, I'm really digging the idea of plantable music so a Big Thanks to amclark too for providing the inspiration for this years Experiment?
Now, the experiment won't be quite as fancy as the Data Garden. we're pretty lo-tech here but I do plan to add more of that slick BBCode. I'll try to stick to the KISS formula starting right now.......
.....Well,
1) i've been sending out sound waves to affect the garden for years and now it appears I can get to the root of it.
2) since I've rejoined emusic anyway and it's less expensive for a thrifty kind of fellow, and way easier to get it there, than trying to get some seeds labeled Plantable Music flown over the border, I bought Greg Fox for the experiment.
3) it just so happens that one of the fellows at work offered me some corn seed he'd somehow over-ordered. Now, I really like corn and still have the teeth to eat it. Perfect test subject.
4) I figure the easiest way to encode the seeds with a digital blueprint will be by using Sound Waves!
5) a- one portion of seed in the cold room (pretty quiet too)
b- one portion of seed treated with Greg Fox exclusively
c- one portion of seed treated with entire rotation (those bytes don't take up much space)
d- save a few portions for select testing.
6) rows of corn will be planted a,b,c and repeat to end on a C.
7) heck, this isn't short at all. Practice, practice, practice.
8) expose seed until seed planting time
9) since I've got a whack of discs (45, lp, cd, and dvd) that aren't in great shape, I believe I can find ways to incorporate them into the Garden this year and see if I can get them to last far beyond their usability and possibly even our existence as a species. Therefore, I'll be adding some of the tracks that I digitized into this years experiment along with any suggestions that come in.
I'll start with
Help, I'm A Rock (Suite In Three Movements) 1st Movement: Okay To Tap Dance 2nd Movement: In Memoriam, Edgar Varese 3rd Movement: It Can't Happen Here
10) along with ScissorMan's Avant Gardner and GermanProf's suggestions-
the rest of Land will go into the regular rotation.
I'll happily provide more info if required.
Hope you'll join me in the garden.
Well, this years Experiment: Vinyl Garden has officially started. It took a while to set up the sound wave generator to get the maximum exposure on the test subjects and download the new wave producers. The first test subjects will be Stokes G114V Fastlane SE a treated (not GMO) bi-colour hybrid sweet corn (Stokes website). They're all portioned out and The Works are already being tested. Greg Fox are ready and standing by for coding after the Mothers.
Thanks to greg for making me look for Joni's vinyl, however as sure as I was that I had the album, it's nowhere to be found. I'm going to sneak in a suggestion by Kez from last year for Iain Matthews and add in
More Than a Song's (Eliza Gilkyson, Iain Matthews, Ad Vanderveen) version of Woodstock.
I thought there'd be an option to select the whole album to be a continuous play on this itunes but perhaps I missed the button. I don't put the Vinyl Garden in random mode anyway but it would be nice to hear it complete on the regular rotation.....
.....Well, the first test of the Vinyl Garden is just about to wrap up and I haven't even finished writing this note. I did remember to add & subtract Greg Fox from the playlist and quite liked the noisier bits the best. I've really enjoyed all the suggestions in this year's experiment and the seeds look pretty happy so far too.
So, i guess I better wrap this up.
You'll notice I added the wireless speaker in as a bonus so that the seeds can get accustomed to it's wave, which should help them seek it out when they get planted.
By the way, The Works also got treated with Jaap Blonk, Area C, The Drift, Mem1, Coppice Halifax, VOX 231, Randy Greif, Wooden Plants: Ilia Belorukov, Dmitriy Krotevich & Andrey Popovskiy, Laurent Pernice, Dan Mangan, Delbert McClinton & Glen Clark, Marco Lucchi, Lisa Knapp, The Weather Station as well as Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale this evening. Philippe Petit is currently providing a mystery on my lastfm...(not sure what's playing now, maybe more David Sylvian or Mark Hollis)
Well, I'm also including The Mothers' King Kong (The Gardner Varieties) from Uncle Meat to help out some Titan sunflower seeds that I hope will grow to be giants
plus The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet (Unfinished Ballet In Two Tableaus) I. Ritual Dance Of The Child Killers II. Nullis Pretii (No Commercial Potential) from Freak Out! because I. that ritual dance ought to be scary enough to keep the slugs at bay and II. as Frank said " Freaking Out is a process whereby an individual casts off outmoded and restricting standards of thinking, dress, and social etiquette in order to express CREATIVELY his relationship to his immediate environment and the social structure as a whole."
Jaap Blonk & Machinefabriek - Ants.....Seems like I spend a lot of time herding them around the yard until I can corral them in a safe spot.
I can't thank Brighternow enough for putting me on to Jaap Blonk. I've still got 34 tracks in the rotation that haven't had the 3 play minimum. The majority of the rotation are tracks from last June to Sept. so I'm sure you & Germanprof will recognize some other old suggestions.
The National - Wasp Nest.....it's best not to rile them up.
Moss Garden - Daily Catachresis......my wife might argue that I'm more like hourly & Floating in Memories.....made me think of visits to Vancouver Island. Thanks
Chris Watson - Namaqua Moves......flies, birds & motion
Interesting sampler, I've only had 6 of the tracks make their first appearance in the rotation and they've been great.
Chris Watson - Stormbeach.......a great addition to the story.
I really enjoyed the story but it didn't seem to fit right now.
edit- I guess i must have used a picture I wasn't supposed to. Now this one I can't seem to make bigger by switching the numbers, so here's a link to the story http://www.caughtbytheriver.net/2012/10/rivertones-2-the-sea-road/
Ictus - Seascape......this, however, showed up in the rotation at just the right time.
The Rare Plants Garden - Sea Song.......I hope those seeds appreciate all that water & The Sunshine.......what garden couldn't use a bunch of that. Thanks

Now I believe my first emusic download will be thanks to ScissorMan.

Reminds me of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock!
