Streaming at the moment, but I'll check it out on emusic as it should be 42p here as it is one track long. For the last few days I've been at a conference at a major UK university. They wouldn't let us sign up on their wireless account, and 3G was near impossible to receive, just about enough to get emails very slowly. I'd think twice about going back their again, amazing in this day.
Despite how utterly ridiculous he looks, this is some seriously good dark R&B (think The Weeknd). He's a local kid who has apparently been in talks with Def Jam and others and I'd been meaning to grab the album from Bandcamp for awhile. Finally got around to it yesterday and now it has been taken down.
- "For all those lucky enough to attend it, the concert of 11 June 2004 during the Agora Festival at Ircam will remain engraved on their memories as an unforgettable moment of grace, an instant of intense crystallisation when, for the length of an evening, we were held in the unceasing grip of naturalness and emotion. This recording tells of that evening. A simple reflection of that sheerly beautiful instant when musicians and listeners abandoned themselves unreservedly to the demands of Jarrells style, in music that, here, is as delicate as it is spellbinding." - "Born in Geneva in 1958, Michael Jarrell studied composition at the Geneva Conservatory with Eric Gaudibert and at various workshops in the United States (Tanglewood, 1979). He completed his training with Klaus Huber at the Freiburg Staatliche Hochschule für Musik im Brisgau. Starting in 1982, his works have received numerous prizes: prix Acanthes (1983), Beethovenpreis from the city of Bonn (1986), Marescotti prize (1986), Gaudeamus (1988), Henriette Renié (1988), Siemens-Förderungspreis (1990) and Musikpreis der Stadt Wien (2010). Between 1986 and 1988, he was in residence at the Cité des Arts in Paris and took part in the computer music course at Ircam. He resided at the Villa Médicis in Rome during 1988/89, and then joined the Istituto Svizzero di Roma in 1989/90. From October 1991 to June 1993, he was composer in residence with the Lyon Orchestra. Beginning in 1993, he became professor of composition at the University in Vienna. In 1996, he was "composer in residence" at the Lucerne festival, and then was heralded by the Musica Nova Helsinki Festival, which dedicated the festival to him in 2000. In 2001, the Salzburg Festival commissioned a concerto for piano and orchestra entitled Abschied. The same year, he was named "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres". In 2004, he was named professor of composition at the Geneva Conservatory."
After reading the excerpt from the book I posted yesterday, I'm listening to a Spotify playlist of the Anthology of American Folk. I've never actually heard it, so I figured it was time.
eMu has added two Harvey Mandel albums from the 90's that I think are not widely available, the above Planetary Warrior, and Snakes and Stripes, which I haven't gotten to yet. Can't say I dig this as much as his older releases but I always liked him and felt he was underappreciated, so any Mandel fans might be interested.

I find myself enjoying this as much as any new jazz I've bought this year.
Lil Spook looks like he's going to mess you up if you tell him one more time to do his homework.
Isnaj Dui - Abstracts on Solitude
I'd like to like this more than I like it.
The Green Kingdom - Egress
The Drift - Blue Hour
Thanks Doofy, just playing the two tracks available for streaming before deciding whether to purchase the download.
Enjoying this too, second play
